Are you trying with pliers?  Your best bet is probably a thinner gauge wire but there are glues that work on glass and metal.

I love it.  I'm looking for a simple dress pattern almost exactly like that for my first project.  And that's the best shade of purple.

You could get a crib mattress for pretty cheap, especially used.  It would be about the size of a loveseat and you could buy sheets for it, paint it (they are vinyl to be waterproof) or cover it yourself.  The possibilities for elevating it off the floor are numerous and a matter of taste. You could even get several and just stack them.
