CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Adding a cap sleeve to a sleeveless dress/top?

I have this dress that is about 9 years old that I can fit into again (yay) and I want to update it. It is ankle length, so I'm going to shorten it to knee length. It is also sleeveless, and I'd like to add some sleeves with the fabric I cut off when I shorten the dress. The fabric is woven synthetic, not stretchy at all, and the bodice is partially lined. I've sewn sleeves before, but always following a pattern, not winging it myself. If figure I can alter the partial lining so it is only facing around the neckline to allow for the placement of a sleeve, but I'm not really sure how to go about making the sleeve.
Any tips? Should I see if there is a pattern in my stash that has a sleeve that will work?
Thanks!
Christine
