251  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: New here and New to quilting on: July 07, 2008 01:06:20 PM
Welcome!  The best place to start would be with some fabric ... anything that jumps out at you or appeals to you.  Beyond that, and a few simple supplies, it's all downhill!  Don't worry about rules, or the "right" way to do anything.  You'll have a lot of luck here with answers to any specific questions you have along the way.  Have fun!

I'm so excited to see this starting up again!  I have been following along with Swap II and I'm itching to get involved.  I've PM'ed my info and I'm waiting to see if I made it in time!  Is everyone open to having a male group member?    Wink

Another great combo I've seen is charcoal grey and robin's egg blue ... and you can even add some orange in there and it looks really good.  Or just the grey and orange works, too.

This is one of my favorite gender-neutral (although it was made for a boy) quilts and has a great color combo:

Post pics when you're done!

Ha -- I was reading through the thread and was going to suggest Turning Twenty ... until I saw your last post.  I'm a beginner and have made two of these ... one of them with only 3 fabrics.  How is yours going?

I agree with the previous poster about "The Modern Quilt Workshop", and would also recommend "Denyse Schmidt Quilts".  Both offer an approach that liberates you from the old-timey ways of doing things.

I agree with Homerof2 ... I think your quilt (which is beautiful, by the way), would best be served by sticking to solids or a subtle tone-on-tone in the borders.  I like the idea of a thin border followed by a thicker one for some contrast.  But I don't think the novelty of the print matches well with the contemporary sophistication of the center.  Just my $0.02 ... good luck and post pics when you've decided!

Looks like I'm a little late to this thread, but another good technique is just to mark a diagonal grid on the entire quilt top ... still the ease of straight lines, but you get a nice diamond pattern that would offset the squares and give some nice motion.  Well, maybe next time!  Can't wait to see pics.

I'm interested ... hope to see it on the swap list SOON!    Smiley

Hi all --

I'm new to Crafster and started poking around specifically looking for quilt swaps.  I'm having a lot of fun tracking your group's progress and I'm really enjoying all of the creativity that's going on.  You've all chosed such great fabrics and I love seeing what you guys come up with.

I'd love to take part in the next round, and I've seen some comments that it probably won't be for a few months.  As a newbie, the 1-month membership rule won't be an issue by then.  But I see that I also have to post at least 15 times before I can join a swap.  I guess this is my first -- any suggestions on where / how to post so often before even participating in a swap?

Thanks so much!
