11  Froth-y & Bat Necklaces in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: December 11, 2009 07:58:28 AM
I just finished these up for photos yesterday -a new bubbly necklace and a fun bat! Both are pierced from steel and brushed finished.  Smiley

The bubble necklace is about 2.5" wide on silver plated chain, and the bat is 2" wide on gunmetal (I really like the look of steel with the antiqued chain). The bat is my favorite.  Grin

I also completed a larger steel "Curiouser & Curiouser" necklace, and a "We're all mad here" necklace with a slightly different finish, though still brushed and matte. Smiley

Thanks for taking a peek! Happy weekend!

12  Forgotten (peacock feather) pendant in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: July 19, 2009 04:36:09 PM
Hello! This is a piece my daughter and I have been working on for a while now. We first saw this peacock feather silhouette on a stamp over a year ago and did a bit of searching to find the owner of the image to see if we could obtain permission to create a derivative work for jewelry. When we were finally able to use the silhouette as our inspiration for the earrings we first made we had a lot of difficulty cutting the piece from acrylic without it being too fragile. When my daughter started working with steel we were able to create the piece the way we originally wanted. Very intricate and wispy! This is the pendant:

It is cut from stainless steel that has been brushed finished. My daughter cuts steel with a laser and a small rotary for detail work, and then small jeweler's files to finish.  Smiley We've also made earrings but haven't taken proper photographs yet. The earrings are cut from a thinner steel that is still very strong, but surprisingly lightweight. We experimented with a mirror finish on these as well but found that the brushed matte finish is our favorite. We're also playing around with hot oxidizing the piece to turn it black.

P.S. These are the earrings we made from acrylic last June(ish?). As you can see we had to thicken the silhouette quite a bit to make the pieces sturdy. We were happy with the end result but still wanted something more intricate.:

13  A pirate's life for me... in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: June 18, 2009 03:29:07 PM
I just wanted to get some opinions on my skull pendant! It's my favorite (or 2nd favorite, maybe) jewelry item I've ever made.  Grin I've cut it from 2mm thick stainless steel that I've brush finished with a coarse aluminum oxide and porcelain media.

And then there's this lovely ship pendant:

Sorry for the poor photos; the steel is really lovely in person and hard for me to capture.  Undecided

14  Oktapous in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: June 17, 2009 04:08:57 AM
I made another octopus!  Cheesy I've cut him from stainless steel and he measures about 2 inches wide. I've brushed finished him with aluminum oxide. I think I'm going to make a pair of octopus stud earrings from steel too.

What do you think?  Smiley

15  Perched (bird ring) in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: June 16, 2009 05:28:43 PM
This is a cute little ring I designed and cut from stainless steel - for my mother originally. It has a matte brushed finish (using coarse aluminum oxide) and sits about 1/2 inch above your finger. I've been wearing one on my index finger and one and my ring finger so they are facing each other.  Smiley

I''d like to make a raven silhouette as well, or maybe a bat.  Undecided

16  We're all mad here in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: June 13, 2009 06:29:52 PM
In that direction, the Cat said, waving its right paw round, lives a Hatter: and in that direction, waving the other paw, lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: theyre both mad.
But I dont want to go among mad people, Alice remarked.
Oh, you cant help that, said the Cat: were all mad here. Im mad. Youre mad.
How do you know Im mad? said Alice
You must be said the Cat or you wouldnt have come here.

My favorite scene in Alice in Wonderland! I've cut the pendant from stainless steel and brush finished the front and back. The text is about 2 inches wide. I made a bigger one originally but I think the smaller size is just right.  Smiley

17  Cream Prairie Skirt in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: May 09, 2009 05:28:28 PM
Hello!

I just finished a lazy afternoon of sewing to make this three tiered skirt for my mother. She picked out the fabric last week and originally wanted a floor-length skirt with distressed visible seams. While she was trying on the skirt to make sure it was a good fit so far, she exclaimed that she wanted me to stop sewing and leave it this way so she could wear it with her boots. Smiley I think it looks really cute on her, and it was only about a 2 hour project. Most of that time was spent fraying the fabric seams.

Sorry about the wind in the photos! It's hard to see the way the ruffles look. It's very shabby chic and she's pleased, so a great day of sewing!

18  Oxidized Steel Adventure in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: May 05, 2009 03:17:01 PM
Hello! I've been moving away from acrylic and experimenting with metals lately, and the coolest thing I've found that I'm able to cut really clean is steel. But I really, really wanted to keep working with black silhouettes. I've been trying a lot of plating techniques (like black chrome) and looked into powder coating (maybe someday!) but I finally found a hot oxidizing technique that turns the steel a beautiful black finish that is skin-safe. I love it even more than the black acrylic, and it's so strong.

I just wanted to show the finish! The unoxodized one is below also for reference. Thanks for checking it out!

19  Melancholy Lashes in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: March 24, 2009 08:06:36 PM
I've finally been able to make it in steel! I started making this design in acrylic last year and I've been wanting to try it in steel or brass for a long time. I love the brushed finish; it really catches the light beautifully, though I had a hard time capturing its satin sheen in photographs. I also made this one just a little smaller than the acrylic version, by almost an inch.

Thanks to my mom for modeling it!

It is very lightweight and just so much fun to wear. What do you think?  Smiley

20  Curiouser & Curiouser (in steel!) in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by UntamedMenagerie on: March 23, 2009 07:53:20 PM
I finally attempted some laser cut steel work! I began working with wood at first, then came acrylic and now metals. I really love the brushed finish. I'm going to play around with different thicknesses to find the perfect gauges for earrings for pendants. Finishing is quite tedious, much more so than acrylic. If anyone has any advice for finishing and polishing I'd love to hear it! Grin

(**Edit: Added new images**)

I'd love to know what you think!
