11  My mambo dancer poppet in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by malisha on: October 09, 2010 11:21:17 AM
On september 15 we mexicans celebrated the bicentennial of mexican Independence. We had a huuuge celebration, which included a parade (kind of a carnival but in a mexican way). I volunteered to participate in there. We started rehearsing on january and it was one of the best things that has happened to me.

In the beginning we were over 70 000 people who wanted to participate, after interviews, castings and stuff, only 7500 were chosen.

I was chosen as a Mambo dancer, actually I was one of the main dancers (the ones that were dancing next to really famous mexican artists). The day of the event, everything came out perfectly, (despite the fact that we were up from 5 am to 3 am next day) and in the end we were allowed to take our costumes home with us.

These were our costumes, I loved them but I knew I'd never wear those again so....

I made myself a poppet using only the things we used in the parade.

The body is made out of the vest we wore before we got our costumes (not the best fabric for puppets but has a special meaning to me) and the costume is a replica of mine. She has white hair because we were going to wear white wigs.

the costume (next to other costumes):

Last week, mexico's president gave us a diploma and thanked us for participating, and I took her to the event. Everyone was in love with her, even the director of the event was thrilled!!!

Hope you like her as much as I do

And as a random picture (my fave picture) during the celebrations, fireworks made the mexican flag in Mexico's main hall.

Here are more pictures if you want to see them (found them in an american newspage) http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/09/mexicos_bicentennial.html?s_campaign=8315. If you read it, just let me clarify that WE ARE NOT HAVING A BRUTAL NATIONWIDE DRUG WAR  (newspapers tend to overreact about minimal stuff) things are pretty peaceful in here. And the government didnt spend much because we all volunteered and most of the things were donated.

16  Re: Little Visitor 11 Winter Galleries !!! in The Swap Gallery by malisha on: March 07, 2010 11:01:28 AM
SOOORRY FOR TAKING SO LONG TO POST THE PICTURES!

Here's Ameyaltzin back from Australia
And she brought a friend (which I've had to hide because my brother's boyfriend has tried to steal since he saw it)

And doesn't she look adorable in her santa's hat?

She brought goodies from the US (and there's a "I love NY" fridge magnet too, not pictured because it's on the fridge right now)

AND then australian goodies!! A calendar with really nice pictures (on my wall right now) and temporary tattoos (I gave ONE to each of my nieces, they're 2, and they keep asking me for more, but that WONT happen, because I'm mean and I will use them in a crafty way)

I'm a september baby & I love nature! And my favourite picture of the entire calendar is in my favourite month! How cool is that!

And  the scrapbook... which I cannot figure where on earth I left it. Becka sent me a super cool recipe of lammingtons and I made them last week (last time that the scrapbook was seen... so might be in the kitchen, I swear I'll look for it and post my fave pictures) btw, do you still have the pictures in your computer? My little brother collects M&M's and was completely crazy about the picture with M&M Elvis. He tried to unglue the picture (but I didnt let him mwahahaa)

It was such a cool swap! We had so much fun with Gus (not only me but my entire family and friends) that I was about to kidnap him (kidding) hopefully he arrives soon and hopefully you like everything I sent. I tried the scrapbook to reflect everyday's life here in mexico and didnt let go any of the traditions that are held between those months. Hope you get the idea!

Here is my super mega awesome package, I got it a week ago, but my camera didnt want to cooperate!!

The first thing I saw when I opened the box was an envelope, with a card which said that she bought the cup before checking my wists (my heart started bumping like crazy!!)

Here's the mug! It's perfect! I love it! I've been wanting a mug like this for ages! Besides.. It's hugeee!! so I can drink gallons of tea!! (and I kept the box too)

These super cute fridge magnets (my favourite one is the bread one)

Pink yarn (can you tell which is my favourite colour?)

Coasters

Tea wallet

Cookies and honey sticks (I loved the ones with raspberry filling ... actually they're gone now!)

Some pomegranate & raspberry green tea, and jasmine blossom green tea (which amused me because i thought it would taste less as green tea and discovered that I loved, specially the pomegranate and raspberry)

The most amazingly soft and warm pink & black scarf (which was perfect for that day because.. it was freezing and, I was wearing black)

Thanks Troublet!!! I really loved everything and I was super spoiled!!!!!

GRACIAS POR TODO! eN SERIO ME ENCANTO!!

19  Ok! maybe not halloween but.. Day of the Dead ofrenda in Halloween Decor and Parties by malisha on: November 09, 2009 01:19:38 PM
Hi guys!
here in mexico we celebrate Day of the Dead instead of halloween (okay we celebrate both, but in our own way)
We use to make an offering (Ofrenda in spanish) to honour our dead relatives and friends, it's said that you put the things that they liked the most (wine, food, etc) along with water, candles, day of the dead bread and sugar/chocolate skulls, because on that day, they come back to visit us.

I'm really proud to be Mexican so I celebrate all this with all my heart, and this year, my friends and I, decided to enter a prehispanic offerings contest(prehispanic offerings are a little bit different). So this is what we did. (the explanation of the ofrenda is behind the pictures if you want to read it)

the whole ofrenda

View from the front

view from one side

the drawing in the center is all made out of beans, rice, wheat and corn. ah! and marigold petals (Called Cempazuchil in mexico) It has 4 arrows, pointing to the north, south, east and west, with a circle that holds a candle each one (to light our relative's path), 4 skulls with a path in front of them (we were supposed to put a glass of water in the end of each path, to keep our relative's spirit away from evil, but we decided not to because it was in the floor and anyone could kick them).
In the center there's a drawing (also made with the seeds I wrote above) of Yum Cimil (mayan god of death)
And in the back, there are fruits, some typical cups with pulque (typical mexican alcoholic drink made out of a cactus),  other cups with atole (another typical mexican drink, kind of flavored milk but thicker), and valuable objects of the relative.

Hope you liked it, It took us about 5 hours to make. And hope you understand it.

C & c welcome!

20  Re: Little Visitor 11 Winter Galleries !!! in The Swap Gallery by malisha on: October 19, 2009 11:49:01 AM
December 30th
we had a guitar hero tournament at my boyfriend's best friend house:

Supermarket first!! To buy the beers!!

Singing with our host:

Here comes the beer!!

Dec 31st
Having his 12 grapes (it took a lot more than the 12 bells for him to eat them, he said they were huge for his beak)

Jan 2nd
we went to Real del Monte (a beautiful town next to my in laws house)

Hangover Gus

With boyfriend and me, romeo and juliet style

After taking a walk... we had to have a beer!!! Here he has been drinking a lot... two of the best mexican beers!

Gus arrived on friday! Just in time for halloween and day of the dead (here in mexico we celebrate day of the dead better than Halloween)

here  he is comming out of his envelope and brought chocolates!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome!!!

Checking out our mexican plants garden (which are also medical plants)

After that he decided to explore the house (and to climb on the kitchen's whiteboard)

HALLOWEEN
first of all we went to the best pizza place in Metepec: Pizza Mecha, here he is standing below the sign

then we went to a bar (called mecha too! It belongs to a friend of ours, the same as the pizza place) Pictured: boyfriend, gus (or his legs at least), me, my brother and Gus again

he got a little drunk with Tequila

mmm actually a lot drunk! He got into the ice basket and when we took it out he was literally dropping!!!
but no picture of that though!

NOVEMBER 6TH
We went to mexico city to see my brother, there Gus met a beaver... and my evil brother thought it was fun to put him into a pan and put him some butter as pillow...

we went there to my nieces firs communion (is it called like that??) which was in Basilica de Guadalupe (one of Mexico's most important churches, and of all latin america I think, where the Virgen de Guadalupe appeared)

and just because they looked beautiful... my nieces!
