1  COOKING / Dessert / Las Vegas cake - it was a big job! on: September 13, 2012 09:47:51 AM
Hi guys

I don't get to do this sort of thing very often, but here is my latest cake project.  It was for a woman at work who was throwing a surprise 40th birthday party for her husband.  His gift was a trip to Las Vegas, so she wanted the cake to be a hint Smiley

It's definitely the most elaborate cake I've done.  The bottom tier is vanilla sponge filled with jam and vanilla buttercream, the middle layer is chocolate with more chocolate, and the die are plain sponge and buttercream.  All the decorations are made from fondant.

2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / I've taken up wood turning! on: January 06, 2012 08:02:57 AM
My Dad recently took up a hobby he'd wanted to do for ages - wood turning.  There is now a lathe in the garage at my parent's house, and after seeing how much my Dad was enjoying it I thought I would have a go.  So here are my first efforts under supervision, a small box made from willow, and a pine spurtle.  (if you don't know what a spurtle is, it's basically a nice stick meant for stirring your porridge.  It's a Scottish thing!!)

3  COOKING / Dessert / Puppy birthday cake on: December 12, 2011 06:38:21 AM
Our puppy turned 1 last month, and I'm afraid to say we had a birthday party for her!  If you look at her cute wee face you'll see why Smiley

Anyway, I was in charge of the 'people' cake, so with it being Bella's 1st birthday and her being an excellent agility dog, I made a cake which was meant to reflect this!

It's a vanilla sponge filled with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream.  The puppy was made from sugarpaste and then painted to resemble Bella.  It met with a sad end about a week later when Bella stole it off of the kitchen worktop and ate the whole thing! (The puppy, not the cake)
4  COOKING / Dessert / Fairytale castle cake :) on: June 05, 2011 04:11:11 PM
I made this for my BF's wee sister's 21st birthday, which was yesterday.  She had originally planned to have a kiddie themed party (face painting, bouncy castle etc) but it ended up as a more grown up evening party with family and friends.  However, I had already planned and started the cake by the time the plans changed, so she got a kiddie style cake anyways!

5  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / The Tutus of DOOM!! on: May 19, 2011 04:51:18 PM
Every year I make costumes for my friend's dance school show.  So for the last 2 months I have been turning 80 metres of tulle and lycra into 22 tutus for little girls.  The dancing display is a week today, so I finished just in time!  Unfortunately I didn't get pictures of all of them together, as they were picked up in stages to avoid my flat looking like a candy floss factory.

I don't ever want to see another piece of tulle again, but I have promised my wee niece her own tutu so I guess I'll just have to get over it Smiley

An individual pink and white one:

A pink and white pile:

Purple ones en mass.  Sadly I forgot to take an individual photo:

And just for fun... as many as I could fit on my arm!

6  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / i finally used my dressform! on: May 11, 2010 06:56:20 PM
So I bought a lovely dressform as a Christmas present for myself, but I've been so busy for the last 4 months that I haven't had any time at all to actually use it Sad  On a recent trip to the fabric shop to pick up supplies for the dancing costumes that are giving my sewing machine nightmares (another story!) I saw some satin that I just loved the colour of, and thought it would do nicely for a nightie I'd had in mind for a while.  After drafting the pattern and putting it together I was desperately trying to fit it to myself when i remembered about the dressform, which was unfortunately at my Mum's.  So off I went up the road to fetch Jemima.  It doesn't fit quite right around the boobs - I think I need to stuff Jemima's bra a bit more - and the big bow isn't great when I roll over, but on the whole I'm pretty happy with it and I didn't stick myself with a pin or have to get my BF to help me check the fit Cheesy

7  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / housewarming presents for the BF on: May 11, 2010 06:35:23 PM
I normally stick to making clothes, but my BF got his own flat a few weeks ago and has finally moved out of home.  He has furniture but none of the niceties - and TBH he wouldn't get them on his own!  So I'm making him some cushions and table mats etc.  There isn't really anything special about them but I absolutely love the fabric so I thought I would share Smiley  There will eventually be 3 cushions, 6 tablemats, 6 napkins and a table runner, but I've run out of the fabric so I'm stalled until I can go and get some more.

8  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Mouse pin cushion on: February 09, 2010 04:41:16 PM
Hello everyone!

I couldn't quite figure out where to put this so I hope this is the right place.  I've been needing a pin cushion for a while and so I made this little guy tonight out of fleece scraps and used a Sharpie to make his eyes, nose and whiskers.  He goes on my wrist on a piece of elastic, and I put a piece of plastic inside to prevent accidental pin injuries.

9  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Wire hearts on: February 08, 2010 05:27:39 PM
Bought some wire recently and started playing with it.  With Valentines day looming I decided to make some hearts Smiley

10  COOKING / Dessert / birthday cupcakes on: December 04, 2009 04:17:17 PM
I usually make death by chocolate in various shapes for my friends birthdays, but for the latest one I decided to make a change and baked some birthday cupcakes instead.  They're just vanilla, chocolate ganache topping with white chocolate stars on top.
