1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / sewing appliques on vinyl? on: January 30, 2012 06:00:41 PM
Hello chaps,
I'm new to this board, although I've posted in the clothing section before, this project is not clothing related so I didn't think I should put it there! I'm after a little advice on how to sew this custom fabric I'm making for someone. It's gonna be used for a motorbike seat cover (think its a chopper but not sure)
Here are some photos of what I've done so far. Be warned - this may make your eyes (or your computer screen) go funny! The pencil lines will be rubbed off after sewing.

I have glued the black vinyl diamonds onto the white vinyl fabric to hold them in place but now I need to sew them.  It needs to be really strong to withstand use. I was planning on using a zigzag stitch, with upholstery thread. But this would make more holes in the fabric thus weakening it, maybe a straight stitch would be better. Also any tips for sewing vinyl? I will be using a domestic singer machine if I zigzag it or an industrial if I do it straight stitch.

if you don't wanna use 4 panels you can just sew two semicircles together and put the ears in the seam.

craftylittleangel - you don't know until you try!! I'd never done anything like this before either but once you get into it it is so much fun and very liberating!  Grin try getting an old piece of fabric or item of clothing and just start sewing on your little scraps and see where it takes you, if the fabric puckers or rips noone need ever know yuo can leave it as is or just sew something else over the top! I definately wanna make more stuff in this style soon... trouble is the time involved and once you start you won't want to stop!

Ooh lucky you thatbluesea that is amazing! I love the colours and the braces - I was thinking about putting straps like that on my skirt had I done it slightly differently.
Do you know, I've just been looking through the gibbous shop again, and our stuff is just as good (all of us!) I swear!
We rock!!

thanks everyone for your lovely comments. yes some of the dog walkers did look a little confused seeing me my other half the dog and the dress form there on the path! I tried to get one of them to model for me, but I think her dogs would have got in the way (she had a bout 5!)
The skirt wouldn't have been the way it was without woodland faerie's input, so if you're reading this, thanks and I hope you work things out soon x

Ok I guess woodland faery hasn't had access to a camera or something  Undecided... but I couldn't wait any longer to show you all what I made.
It's a bustle and underskirt attached to a customised leather and fabric belt. The underskirt looked pretty all on it's own, so I put on some little buttons and loops so it can be removed and worn on its own. I spent a lot of time in the woods studying colours and textures to make it lovely and foresty just how she wanted it.
