1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Selling my Craft Business (Suncatcher Eyes) on: December 31, 2008 02:39:05 PM
I'm sorry to say that the chances of selling your crafting business lock, stock and barrel will be slim to none.
Unless your business has earned huge income or behaved spectacularly is some way, most people will set up their own. Starting a business is not rocket science.
Good luck.

2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Does anyone know how to market a craft workshop? on: December 31, 2008 02:27:53 PM
Check to see if there is an art center anywhere near you. They charge you for the space, and you in turn charge your students for the class and any supplies. If that is not an option, then I would check with a hotel conference center about holding it there. I would not suggest that you use your home as it puts you in a whole new catagorie for your home owner's insurance. If someone was to fall on your walkway, and insurance finds out that you were teaching classes(and you are not zoned as commercial property) it will refuse to pay any claims-which leaves the responsibility right on your shoulders.
The etsy team that I organized meets at a local pottety shop, and a crafter's group meets at the local Panera Bread resturant with their blessing.
Look around to see what facilities are available in your area.

3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: manual credit card imprinter on: December 04, 2008 04:04:42 PM
No, ProPay does not require a credit card reciept, but the first time your client disputes a claim and you don't have a reciept with a signature, you will lose the payment and they will still have your item-Just hope it wasn't an expensive piece. If the client disputes the charges and you have that signed credit cardslip, then you will win the dispute-the customer signing the credit card slip proves that they made the purchase.
If you use ProPay-go to their website www.propay.com and go to the section on imprinters-I think it is Mr.Imprinter. It is totally worth it to have that manual imprinter. Internet connections is not always available to
do online credit card processing or can be unreliable due to location.

4  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: Tent advice on: December 04, 2008 03:54:01 PM
I just purchased a new tent. We had purchased 2 from EZ UP(the Ambassedor model and AmbassadorII) and had terrible luck with them.
The last one was only set up 3 times and the frame broke in several places and was a mess.
I have heard that the caravan tents do well, and the commercial EZ UP. I just purchased this one at
www.elitedeals.com for 299.00 It has 4 side walls, the rolling carry case, and has a 2 year manufaturers warranty. When I told the customer service rep about the problems we had with our previous EZ UP products, she said that was why the AmbassadorII was discontinued-was sold at SAMS.
Good luck withwhatever you choose to buy. Make sure you make heavy weights for the legs so that it doesn't try to fly away in a wind.

5  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Copyright question-- selling disney/harry potter/etc themed crafts? on: December 04, 2008 03:27:22 PM
The general rule is; If when you look at an item, it makes you think of that character, then you are violating copyright law. For example: I want to make an item with a football theme to it. I want to use the Dallas Cowboys on my item. In this case the Words "Dallas Cowboys", the color schedme, the font of the letters, the mascot image are all copyrighted and trademarked items.
For Disney, if the item makes you think Mickey Mouse, or the mouse ears, those are tademarked as well.
I personally would not mess with Disney in any way. I have in the past been hired by Disney Corporation to scope out craft shows for people selling items with any of the Disney Characters. I am authorized to hand out cease and desist notices, with orders to get a business card and mail it in with my reports. Disney's legal eagles then get involved. For me as a professional embroiderer, I could lose my embroidery machines,my computers, all of my designs that I paid to purchase, and all of my supplies and blanks. That would be in the neighborhood of $140,000 in financial loss. Too much to risk-I know so.

I will probably be a little late for the meeting. I have to pick up some items around 6:00-may be able to do that a bit earlier. Are we going to try for that back table again?? See you all tomorrow.

I was all signed up for Hillsboro this year and had my fees all paid when we had a family emergency. I hope they willnot hold it against me next year when I apply.
Is the Marion craft show the one in September??
My old craft register lists it as the "Art in the park and craft show" and is sponsored by the chamber of commerce 1-620-383-3425.Most craft shows don't change info real often, and even the dates don't change much.

I will be doing the Clearwater Christmas Show on Nov 8th, Christmas in the Country/Oxford Nov 28th & 29th, and the Derby Rec Center Show on Dec 6th.

Perhaps we can exchange craft show info at one of our new crafter unite crafter group??

9  UNITED STATES / Kansas / Looking for Wichita Area Etsy Crafters on: October 30, 2008 05:19:56 PM
Hi everyone,

I am searching for etsy shop owners in the Wichita Kansas area or nearby. I would like to start an etsy
street team locally, so am posting here rather than etsy catagory. The goal of the street team is to promote etsy, educate the public about buying handmade, and promoting our shops and the things we make.
It does not matter what you make and sell, just that you do. If you are interested in doing craft/art shows-way cool. There is strength in numbers and friendship amongst crafters.
If you are interested in joining us, just message or email me.
