I teach art to some home school kids and I have them doing inchies as their final semester projects. It has been so much fun to watch what they come up with! (And gives me an excuse to inchie at work!!)  =D

5  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Re: 7ft woman made almost entirely out of trash. Very Pic Heavy!! on: October 20, 2010 04:47:53 AM
Thanks! It was the first sculpture I have ever done.  It weighed about 95 lbs. There were eight of us and mine was probably the lightest. So on the sculptures alone probably close to 800 lbs. We also set out and collected recyling in bins at the last several events the sponsoring group put on.  It is a really exciting project!

This summer I was selected as one of 8 artists to do a green recycling art project in Downtown Houston.  We were given a "base" and asked to construct a 6-7 ft tall woman completely out of things that could be recycled.

"Planeta Verde Now, Talento Bilinge de Houston's green initiative arts program, invited Houston artists to design
an original Comadre fashioned out of recycled, repurposed and found materials in honor of Pachamama (the Latino equivalent to Mother Earth.)

"The sculptures are designed to commemorate sustainable ideas and practices which benefit and nourish our Pachamama," curator Angel Quesada explains. "These comadres (sisters of mother earth) represent radical environmental ideas.""   -The Houston Press

Each artist designed their Comadre and gave her a history of why she was a leader in Houston's green initiative.  They were on display at Discovery Green, Houston's downtown green space for a little over a month and are currently on display at Talento Bilingue de Houston.

My Comadre:

Dona Ana Maria Ramos began a grass roots educational program teaching school children in public
schools sustainable urban farming techniques. She equipped each school with an urban garden large
enough to produce 75% ofthe schools lunch programs demands. Each garden was planted, tended to
and harvested by the students of that school with any unused produce sold at local farmer's markets
and the proceeds re-invested into the sustainable living program at that school. Ana Maria also
developed a grant program for the students to take the knowledge gained in her program back into their
communities by reclaiming empty lots and abandoned housing projects and establishing community
gardens in 80% of all Houston neighborhoods, providing all children an opportunity to eat fresh and
healthy foods.

8  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Little Visitor Swap Round 12-Summer Fun!(S/U to 5/13/10; S/O 5/21/10) CLOSED! on: August 03, 2010 07:35:10 PM
After talking with BeckaShell and Sweety28303, Jay is going to stay a few extra days so that he can be at the opening of the sculpture show at Discovery Green downtown that he has helped me with.  He is an amazingly good sculptor! He had a great idea that helped me fix a fabrication design flaw. So, he will be heading home the 4th or 5th of September.

He did say to tell Sweety28303 that he misses you and is homesick even if he is having a lot of fun!

Yay!
