32  Cellophane fairy wings w/ tutorial (now w/3 sets) in Completed Projects by flyinpurplemunkiez on: December 03, 2005 02:47:50 PM
I'm trying to make (human sized) cellophane wings, again. My last pair turned out pretty awful. These are only a few inches tall because I made them as practice for the big ones I'll soon be making.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/flyinpurplemunkiez/DSCF4765.jpg

You'll need:
*cellophane
*wire (I use 14 gauge wire from OSH or Home Depot for human sized wings, something a lot thinner and softer would be better suited for doll sized wings)
*wire cutters
*paper
*pen/pencil
*glue (I used a hot glue gun because it dries fast and clear)
*lighter
*incense

Step 1: crumple up your cellophane and then flatten it back out.

This gives it that pretty wing texture and makes your wings change colors nicely when the light hits them.

Step 2: cut off a length of wire and bend it into a frame.

Step 3: sketch out a pattern for your wings (don't forget to leave room to fold over the edges) and cut that out.

Step 4: use that pattern to cut out your cellophane.

Step 5: place your wire on top of your cellophane and start gluing. It's best to do small sections at a time.

Step 6: glue, fold over cellophane, press down, repeat until you have it all done.

Now time for decoration...
Step 7: I felt that the edges have a too perfect/unatural look to them so I carefully melt that edge by holding a lighter close to it. Make sure not to let them actually catch on fire because you'll quickly have no wing left (can you tell that I speak form experience?).

Step 8: A stick of incense is perfect for controlled holes. You just poke the wings for small holes or move it in a circle for larger holes. If you don't have incense you can create holes by holding your lighter under them but the holes will be bigger and far less controlled.

Now, all you have to do is repeat all that for the other side.

This is closer to what they really look like, the flash makes them look far too pink.

33  Marbled photo-book in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by flyinpurplemunkiez on: December 03, 2005 11:37:33 AM
My mom hasn't been doing very good healthwise so I made her a photobook with pictures from when my little brother was in town with me (they live together, about a two hour drive from me).

The pages just sit inside the cover and the ribbon holds it all together when it's not beeing looked at. This way if my mom wants to put any of them on her wall they're all ready to go.

P.S. No I didn't make the paper for the cover. It was part of what I got from my fabulous swap partner in the paper swap.

34  CD bowl...tree... in Completed Projects by flyinpurplemunkiez on: November 28, 2005 03:10:09 PM
I was trying to make a flat, crackly cd in the oven (our microwave is broken) but it didn't work. The CD did get far more bendy than I thought it would so I tried making it into a bowl (the same way you'd make a record bowl). Surprisingly that worked but a bowl seemed boring so I used a bit of clay to make it into a tree.

35  Alice in Wonderland (shirt: dyed, stenciled and laced) in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by flyinpurplemunkiez on: October 24, 2005 10:55:14 AM
I had this white shirt that I washed with some colored clothes, oops. It turned nasty yellow and had purple stains all over it. So I made it pretty.

Before:

The first thing I did was dye the shirt and the lace red with some Rit.

Then I stenciled on Alice chasing the white rabbit and sewed on the lace.

The stencil doesn't really look multicolored, it's just the flash being evil.

I love that dress. I actually own a modified replica of that exact dress.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/j9photos/25155.html I didn't make it though, I bought it off someone who did.

38  Alkaline Trio Record Journal in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by flyinpurplemunkiez on: October 16, 2005 10:50:56 AM

I just cut up a record with my paper cuter after melting it a bit over a the stove and made the holes with a normal hole punch. It wasn't wasn't really an Alkaline Trio album. I just glued that pictures over the random 80's band label. There's about 40 pages inside. The back cover is from an old notebook. Thanks to Anu for the insperation and instructions (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=772.0)

39  Re: Grocery tote bags: happy bread, sad toast AND MORE (updated) in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by flyinpurplemunkiez on: October 14, 2005 10:30:08 AM
I love this!  I second the tutorial request!  I am kindof bad at making bags so anything you could post would be awsome. Grin  Thanks for the great idea!  Good job! Grin Cheesy

I'm surprised you guys want a tutorial. Smiley They're pretty much just messenger bags without the flap that folds over the top and no lining. But I guess if you've never made a messenger bag then that doesn't help at all....

Here's all the pieces you need for the main part of the bag:

Step one: Sew them all together with the outside of your fabric on the inside. I sewed the pieces together in a different order each time to see if there was a best way to do it and it worked just fine either way.

Step two: Flip right side out.

Step three: Fold over the top edge over/inside about and inch (pin it down if you have the patience to do things properly, which I don't) and sew that.

Now you have a nice fabric box with/out a lid. All you have to do is add a strap/handle of some sort.

40  Felt book (Updated: now a wall hanging) in Completed Projects by flyinpurplemunkiez on: October 13, 2005 10:21:41 PM
I'm making my boyfriend a felt book for his 23rd birthday.

C   ats (we both adore cats)
O   cean (90% of our dates over the past 3 years have been to the beach)
L   ove
I    nsect (we have this odd obsession with pretending to bees. Oh yes, we're odd ones)
N   ut (Long story but the short version is that acorns are our symbol of love)

I haven't decided if I'd rather turn it into a book or a wall hanging. If I were to turn it into a wall hanging I'd attach the "pages" like this with ribbons running along the back:

All the painted parts kinda suck because I had to use a bobby pin to paint them (my smallest paint brush was still too big).

Credit where credit is due:
*The cats are liselotte_e's designs
*I got the idea from kickandslide's post about the felt book she made (http://www.livejournal.com/community/craftgrrl/6920998.html)

Sorry, I didn't know where to put this. PAPER CRAFTS, JOURNAL & BOOK MAKING because it's a book? TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS because it kind of is a toy/plaything more than an actual book? HOME SWEET HOME because it's just going to sit around as decoration? I give up.

EDIT:
I actually decided to make it into a wallhanging instead of a book:
