22  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Hot Air Balloons - Stoliedina's First Paper Craft - IMG Heavy on: June 05, 2006 08:39:04 PM
Hello, my name is Sarah and I'm a craftaholic.

I've tried for awhile now to steer away from paper as a medium, because I already dabble into too many things. However, an idea popped in my head one day that just wouldn't go away...

Hot air balloons made from: origami papers, newspapers, ephemera, vintage photos, recycled paper, paint and a few secret ingredients. It's far from perfect, but I'm happy with my first effort.

I'm kind of fascinated with giving new lives to people in vintage photos. I always find them so sad at flea markets and such, because I feel like these people were once special and had a family. So I thought I'd send them on a fabulous air adventure and give them nifty new identities. (Names TBA)

*Apologies for the heavily photoshopped images, my lighting is terrible, so fun pictures instead of realistic ones. This is gorgeous in person!*

*EDIT - just in case anyone wasn't clear from the arty pictures these are hang-able 3-D balloons, not just a collage Smiley *

23  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Use What You Have and Finish What You Have Craftalong on: June 05, 2006 06:06:49 PM
Hi all - I hope that this is an appropriate place to post this.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/usewhatyouhave/

 http://flickr.com/groups/95191180@N00/

So two of the blogs that I read, Turkey Feathers and Simple Sparrow, started challenges to Use What You Have and then Finish What You Have. They each have respective Flickr groups set up, and I just thought it was a really great challenge to pass on to Craftster peeps. Seriously - how many of us have stashes of yarn and fabric and paper and beads - or all of those things, or a project or eighty half finished in the closet. The original Use What You Have took place over a month and part of it was not to shop at the craft store or thrift for supplies for that month. YIKES! But just think if you resisted shopping until you did one project that dented into your stash. It would still make a difference. I'm going to post my pictures of finished projects here and on the flickr groups as well. I hope maybe this will inspire some of you too!
24  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Stoliedina's DIY Wedding - Progress progress progress on: May 31, 2006 10:08:34 PM
Hi everyone,

I just did a big post over at my blog about my wedding progress thus far:

http://www.geekxnerd.com/blog.html

My theme is sort of pin-up, retro rockabilly, punk show wedding - ha! The invites are supposed to be like old rock posters, our favors are 1" buttons, I'm having so much fun!
25  UNITED STATES / New Hampshire / Mini Fair Anyone? on: May 29, 2006 01:04:29 PM
Hi all - August 19th my  mom wants to have a big yard sale. She'd like to sell some of her crafts and she wanted me to sell some as well because she doesn't feel she has enough for an entire table. My parents have a big flat back yard and if the weather turns out to be nice it's perfect for a little mini craft fair.

Would anyone be interested in selling? You would have to provide your own table, so we wouldn't charge anything, just come on down!
26  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Is it a bonnet? A headband? A half hat? on: May 05, 2006 08:22:15 PM
I made this head band for a swap that I was doing. It was inspired by a picture that I saw on a French blog. I love it so much I don't want to give it away but I plan on making many more for myself!

P.S. Because the light is so bright and it distorts the colors I'll describe the fabrics - black with white pindots as the base, red rick rack, small yo yo = red with white pin dots and large yo yo = red and white patterned fabric...

27  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Crafting for Kit on: February 17, 2006 07:40:47 AM
Hi Craftster peeps,

My friend Kit is 27 years old. She's more commonly known to people in our area as the "Hot Dog Lady" And she's been having a very bad year.

First off her position as a hot dog vendor at Mousum Lake was threatened when local conservative types claimed that she and her cart were a traffic hazard. This after she has been doing this for 10 years! Read the story at these links: http://news.mainetoday.com/stories/040831hotdog.shtml and http://travel.mainetoday.com/fromaway/blog/000358.shtml

Later on she was diagnosed with colon cancer - and put through light chemo  to see if they could save part of her colon. She was told that this cancer is most likely genetic, so she made the decision to have a hysterectomy so that she would not pass this on to any of her children.

At the end of her light treatment, when she was weak and gathering strength at home for her surgery, her boyfriend tried to strangle her and attacked her parents when they tried to protect her. He is now out of jail on bond and will be arraigned soon.

After that traumatic experience Kit went into the hospital a few days ago. They were not able to save her colon, she will wear a colostomy bag for the rest of her life. And unfortunately the cancer has spread to her liver. She has to undergo intensive chemo and she has a 30-40% chance of survival.

I'm going to post information on this in my blog as well - but what I would like to do for Kit is create kind of a Sampler like http://www.homeofthesampler.com to bring to her in the hospital. I feel like she's such a good person and she's been through so much CRAP lately - I just want to bring some joy to her bedside.

If anyone has suggestions for good gifts to cancer patients, or would like to contribute something please PM me. And please have confidence that this is not a scam to try and get samples out of everyone - this is just a good sweet person who need something to make her smile.

Thanks everyone!
28  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Popcorn Quilt? on: September 20, 2005 08:52:39 PM
Hi everyone,

I searched before I'm posting this, so maybe some of you quilters can help me out.

I'm looking for a tutorial on what I believe is called "popcorn" quliting. The individual pieces of the quilt look like little hexagons that have been drawn up around something leaving a hole in the middle of one side of the piece.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?
29  UNITED STATES / Maine / Consignment Opportunity for Maine Craftsters on: September 08, 2005 04:49:07 AM
Hi Maine peoples,

I'm going to be attempting in the next few months to open a web store with my own crafts, and I would like to have consigners from all over New England. It seems to me that the New England boards, with the exception of Massachusetts - it's a big state! - seem pretty quiet. I know that there must be many a talented crafter out there, just needing some exposure.

I'm interested in any type of craft really - it would help if you have pictures of your work, just PM me if you're slightly interested!

Thanks so much!

Sarah
