My dearest daughter is in 4-H, and just finished performing in the yearly fashion revue! With my help, she created this ruffle skirt using no pattern. We saw one kind of like it on the internet & I remembered having one as a girl, so she picked out fabric and winged it! The skirt part was made the traditional way with elastic waist. We then made ruffles using rope elastic and sewed them right on top of the skirt part. This was the most difficult part, the part that she needed help with.
Here she is modeling her new skirt! Please excuse the over-the-top pose, she is a definate drama queen! (And also the background decorations, the theme was "dream career" and hers is a dance instructor)
She was judged & participated in the fashion show wearing it, and now she has a pretty new rainbow ribbon to show for it! What do you think?
This farm animal train cake I made for my two year old's birthday. The train cars & engine were made with regular cake mix in mini-bread loaf pans. The round part of the engine was regular cake mix in a washed-out soup can.
I froze the engine parts & then carved them & fit the pieces together like a puzzle. I placed the cars upside down so the top was flat. I had to freeze the cake a bit and use a frosting knife dipped in hot water to make the frosting go on smooth. The cars & engine are decorated with colored buttercream icing & candies. I placed a farmer on the engine & animals on each car. The smokestack is a large marshmellow.
The tracks are black licorice & wafer cookies, wheels are oreo cookies. The grass & hay is coconut mixed with food coloring.
If you had circus animals & a little clown, that would be very cute too! This cake made my little boy SO happy on his birthday & guaranteed if you boy loves trains, he'll love this too!
This is my VERY FIRST woven blanket!! What does everyone think? And please I would love input from those more experienced than myself!!
I've made hats before using the knifty knitter hat loom set, but recently I bought the knifty knitter long loom set! My brother and sis in law are having a baby boy. They'll be giving birth in the Phillippines and leaving in a month or so, so I had to get this done FAST!! It took me several days of working on it.
My mother in law gave me a huge BIN of yarn imagine the possibilities!! So there was a lot to choose from. Finally I decided on cream, light brown, dark brown and light blue. I used the green long loom, looping around the pegs and flipping over. Once I was done with the blanket I hand tied the fringe, wove a square for the hood, folding and sewing in two corners to make it a hood. Out came my crochet hook, because my blanket was curling in and I didn't like the ragged edges. So I tripple crocheted around the whole blanket a couple times and also around the hood.
The whole idea with the blanket was that they could put the hood over the baby's head, and then swaddle him with the sides of the blanket.
My friends and I threw a birthday hula party. We used my friends EMPTY apartment and brought all kinds of decorations to re-do it specially for the party. IF YOUR INTERESTED IN THE FOOD - see the food section for my separate post!!
Here is a corner of the main room. NOTICE the homemade beach!! We put sand on a tarp, and seashells, we put a fishing net on the wall with little creatures and starfish, and christmas lights. Notice the "bonfire" in the middle of the room. Colored tissue paper, lights inside and a fan made it look more realistic in the dark. Pic doesn't do it justice.
And a cozy sitting nook on the other side of the room, pillows for people to sit on. They also brought their own beach towels.
The whole room
The gifts, there were 3 gals having a birthday
My friend brooke is so crafty with scrapbooking. She made this for the wall
Our drink table - we made smoothies and virgin dacquiris and pina coladas
Our food table - hawaiian haystacks, fruit flower arrangement, kabobs, and hawaiian pineapple/coconut cake
Entryway table with party favors:
On one wall and into the kitchen:
OOPS this one is upside down, don't know how to fix it. But it's one of the windows.
LAST ONE I promise! ANother pic of the food, it was so yummie! Don't forget to check out the directions in the food section!
My friends threw a hula birthday party. I made the fruit flowers (easier than it lookds) and other friends brought the hawaiian haystacks & kabobs. Here are the pics and instructions! PS: All the decorating part of the party I posted in a separate post under home decorating. We decorated an empty apartment complete with a homemade beach, so check that out too!!! http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=253999.0;topicseen
The food table: Menu consisted of Hawaiian haystacks, rolls, bbq kabobs, hawaiian coconut/pineapple cake, and fruit flower arrangement.
Hawaiian haystacks: White Rice, a chicken gravy made with chicken, condensed milk, crm of chicken soup, and white sauce, and toppings such as almonds, green onion, celery, pineapple, coconut, oriental crunchy noodles, shredded cheese, peas, etc...
Here is the fruit flower arrangement:
You will need a head of lettuce, honeydew, watermelon, cantelope, strawberries, kiwi fruit, large grapes, and one ripe pineapple. For supplies you need a large bowl, kabob sticks, a knife, a melon baller, and a flower shaped cookie cutter. Use a melon baller to ball up honeydew, watermelon, and cantelope. Slice the tops off strawberries, Peel & thickly slice kiwi fruit. Take your pineapple, turn it on it's side, and slice in 1/4" slices. Then use your cookie cutter to cut out pineapple flowers. Taking your sticks, put on 1/2 cantelope ball, a flower, and 6 grapes for the flowers. When your flowers are made, use the rest of the fruit on the kabobs however you would like (alternate colors though) Put your head of lettuce (with the bottom sliced off, flat bottom down) in the bowl & stick your kabobs all over it evenly. Ta Da!
These kabobs were barbecued. Remember to soak your skewers for several hours beforehand. Slice and marinate your chicken and/or shrimp. (my friend used storebought marinade) She used black olives, pineapple, cherry tomatoes, chicken, shrimp, baby onions, and cut green and red pepper into star shapes.
Don't have a picture of the cake, but my friend said she used a regular white cake mix with pineapple and coconut added. It was a layer cake with sweet buttercream frosting and fresh fruit designed on top. the pineapple made the cake SOOOO moist, it was yummy@!!!
OK, I've been into glass etching for years and years. Most of my best pieces though are either broke, or I've given away. These are a couple I had lying around. I'd like to get back into glass etching, it's lots of fun!
This one is on glass pane, used clear shelving paper and freehand with the exacto blade, then applied etching compound. Sorry about the flash reflection!
This second one is on a large square mirror. I used a painting as inspiration, but freehanded it as well. It was created the exact same way as the first one.
I'll post more if I can dig other ones out of storage, or when I start back up again!
This is my first attempt at a vintage look. Do you think I ought to replace the clasp and earring hooks with something else more appropriate? If so, any ideas? This website has me SO hooked! almost every night I hole up in my room after the kids are in bed and craft the midnight oil away. The result sometimes tho looks like I was half asleep or sometimes I might miss something because I'm tired, haha! So feedback welcome on this and my other projects!!
I saw the yarn and *HAD* to buy it! I made this scarf using a loom, so I guess I'm in the right category? There are buttons of all different colors in the fringe, although you can't really see them in the picture. This is only my 2nd scarf, my first being made the same way only it was a gift for my sister so I have no pic.
I made this last night, I've been saving these metal beads covered with glass seed beads for something special. I knew I wanted a long necklace & matching earrings, so I played around last night & this was the result! Can't wait to wear it!
::)I was so inspired by a charm bracelet posted recently & just had to try to make my own, so here it is!! I chose turquoise, rose, cream, pink, browns, and gold for a color scheme. I included buttons, glass beads, shells, metal jewelry pieces, and metal beads. I think it turned out pretty well & can't wait to wear it somewhere!!
