12  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Origami Glitzy Wreath on: November 29, 2012 08:47:12 PM
This post should have been titled "When Glitter Attacks" but since I don't have any carnage pictures, I'll stick to the wreath.

After joining the Sweat Shoppe Ornament Swap, I got a little addicted to making these beauties
By the time sendouts arrived, they were overrunning their storage container so they obviously needed a new home.

Happily around that time, a group of friends decided to throw a wreath making party.  Now, I had an idea!  Make a wreath with them....but what kind.  Enter Pintrest, inspire-er extraordinare and delayer of housework with a quirky cost effective solution.  A wreath made of wrapping paper

So I jetted to the store to pick up a nice solid bit of wrapping paper...Here is where the sneak attack began.  My kiddo was with me.  He often helps with crafting so that isn't all bad, but he does have a taste for the bold.  Roll Eyes Again, not a bad thing he just doesn't understand my one rule in crafting is that glitter isn't allowed in the house. Naturally he uses his cuteness to convince me that all other paper would lack the impact and festive spirit of Glitter-covered wrapping paper.  *sigh*

Well, here it is!

I do like it, although I crafted in the driveway or at a friends house to keep my glitter rule in place Grin

Close up of the Moravian stars

Since my paper would not glue to anything (including itself) I stapled the whole thing together around a formed wire hanger.  Honestly, with all the silver sparkles you can't see the staples very well.  Wink

Would love to hear what y'all think.

15  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / Newborn Knight's Dragon on: July 14, 2011 03:15:39 PM
I'm working on a gift for an expecting friend.  Her son's nursery is decorated in knights & dragons.  After debating what I could make, I decided upon a tiny dragon friend for the little knight to befriend.

Even though I'm posting this on the completed board, I'm unsure if I should add other details.

I tend to overthink everything but decided that since this was for a newborn, pieces should be as few in number as possible.  The nose is the only part that was created separate from the main body, the spines are crocheted directly onto the finished ami.  I figured that made it more nom-able and didn't add legs since they didn't look right.

If I make another one, I will weight the bottom a bit so it can stand, but I didn't want it to become a painful toy to be hit with. Cheesy

Any thoughts?  Comments?  I'm thankful for any Wink

Dust off your yarn and let's get playing![/size]
For those who are interested..."Ami" means knit/crochet in Japanese and "nuigurumi" means stuffed creature, so amigurumi is a stuffed knit/crochetted creature.  Well, that is simple and can mean just about anything from a bobomb in your pocket to the little hooked kitty sitting on your shelf.  Often cute or fanciful and not commonly large, amigurumi is an enjoyable craft with a nice finished product even for beginners.

Where do you find patterns for amigurumi? All over the internet are quite a few sites that have free amigurumi patterns.  Some require registration, some don't.  Of course Craftster is my favorite. But here are a few that I have found.
http://freeamigurumipatterns.blogspot.com/
http://craftlog.org/craftingjapanese/archives/amigurumi/ -a diverse site with a lot of pictures and some good links.

If you can't find what you are looking for, but really prefer a pattern, you might try this site.
Etsy is always an option also, or just "wing" it.

18  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / Oscar My Koi Friend on: February 01, 2011 08:47:36 PM
Last spring I stumbled upon an ami that I knew I must have.  Here  The problem, it is in Portuguese (which I don't speak) and looked horribly complex to the simple crochetter that I am.  Enter a good bit of bravery brought on by an encouraging 6 year old and suddenly I was the Mom of Steel....Well steel hooks anyway.

Out of that, my friend Oscar was born.

For some reason, I thought that I was starting at the mouth, when it was well....not the mouth, but he turned out well.  I used some Halloween I Love This Yarn since the color matched a goldfish from my childhood.
Here is the fancy tail that I am very proud of. His curls more than it should but I don't mind. The diagram in the pattern was very helpful for understanding how to make the tail.  I think in circles and spirals, so the straight lines took a bit of coaxing.

Next came the beautiful scales   A whole new stitch that was totally unlike any I used before.  Love the texture that it adds.

The mouth took a little playing with, but I think that it came out in a nice fish kiss shape

For a little while Hubs was asking me why I was crochetting a pinecone made of candycorn, but the final result was better than I hoped for.

All of Oscar together
