12022  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Re: From hand drawn art to embroidery pattern... please help! on: May 29, 2009 09:59:35 AM
There are a couple people you can pm and ask about it. I'm thinking, Flossbox, Sewitsforyou, badbird. I know they do their own embroidery patterns. Also check out flickr embroidery group and www.feelingstitchy.com-they may have a tutorial.

This is a traditional Suzhou hand embroidery. Suzhou is the home city of Chinese hand embroidery art. Most of the embroiderers start their first embroidery when they were very young (say 8, 10 years old), because in the countryside of Suzhou, embroidery skill is passed down from generation to generation. They usually learn from their monther, grandma. Some of them will learn from master embroidery artist.

The master embroidery artist usually take lessons from Academy of Arts so they can have basic knowledge of painting since it is an essential to create a good hand embroidery.

The embroidery ladies all take good care of their hands, otherwise the refined silk thread will be damaged by the rough skin. Usually they dont do heavy work, and dont choose the irritant rinses when do the washing.

What do they do to take care of their hands? Thank you so much for the information. It's so interesting.

12030  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Re: How to keep fabric from bunching on: May 28, 2009 08:20:44 AM
I know I have to be careful with that and I think the best way for me is not to pull the stitches too tight. I also try sample stitches on a piece of fabric before I try it on my work. That way I get a feel for the stitch.
