We've had our iPad2 since late last year but I managed to make a case only today. Installing a zipper is always daunting for me, hence, the delay.
The outer cover is denim lined with fusible fleece. I printed out an Apple logo and used it as a template to make my applique.
The interior is quilting weight cotton lined with light fusible interfacing. I used a continuous zipper cut to length for this purpose. As with my other recent projects posted here (cosmetic bag and travel wallet), I opted for bias binding to give the cover a nice finish.
Most handmade iPad cases I've seen around are simple sleeves or zippered pouches (like large cosmetic bags) so I hope this gives you inspiration to try out something different. Elastic corners to hold the iPad and all around zippered closure for maximum security!
So glad this thread got bumped, I love your travel wallet! Now the one I made for myself a few years ago simply won't do, yours has inspired me. Can I ask what interfacing you used to make it so stiff and thick?
I used Peltex 71F. It is a single-sided fusible ultra firm stabilizer. Really very stiff so it's great for this purpose.
Wow! What a detailed wallet. It's incredible. Doesn't look handmade at all. I'm so impressed at the work and thought put into this. (Not to mention that this wallet would have been absolutely perfect for my 2 sudden trips to the states.) The fabric you used is so very appropriate and I'm eyeing the bias tape or border. Looks like the fabric came that way. What a professional job.
Thank you so much! Btw, I made the bias tape from just a small piece of leftover fabric. It's better than buying premade cause you can use any coordinating fabric of your choice.
I was so honoured to have my travel wallet be part of the PBW Featured Projects of 2011 that it got me inspired to try and make an even better version of it. I completed it last night and what can I say...this must be one of the best things I have ever sewn in my life...
Closed wallet
Open wallet
Left side with pen holder, passport pocket, ticket pocket and one long pocket
Right side with ID and credit card slots, 2 other pockets and luggage key holder
Cover...great fabric, right?
With all my stuff
It has all the features of my first travel wallet (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=382278.msg4523760#4523760) except it has one less long pocket (I thought it was not necessary) and also, one less card slot. It is much thicker than the first one as I used ultra firm stabilizer for the cover and light fusible interfacing for the rest of its parts. I also made the bias binding tape myself and now that I know how to do that, I am never going back to boring, plain, bias tapes again!
So happy with it. Anyway, hope you like this one as much as I do!
I've been having real fun making these cosmetic bags. So far I've made 3. I like it so much because it is not like the usual zippered bags/pouches. I think the binding gives the bag a really finished look.
The finished size is 5" (H) by 7" (W) b7 2.5" (D).
Love your wallet....what perfect fabric. Did you use a pattern? I've been wanting to make one.The fob for your luggage key is genius! Thanks for the inspiration.
Hello! I have not been here for some time now as I have not had much spare time to sew lately. But finally, I got my travel wallet done yesterday after much procrastinating. I am pretty pleased with the outcome.
The closed wallet is about 4 3/4" by 8 1/2".
This is what the inside looks like.
The left side has two angled pockets, one for the passport and one for the airline ticket and boarding pass and an elastic pen loop.
The right side has an ID window, card slots, two long pockets for some cash and a holder for my luggage key.
The wallet is very sturdy and thick. I found it quite hard to hand sew the bias tape but I think it gave the whole thing a nice finished look.
Thanks for looking! Your comments are always appreciated.
