21  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: The Great Geek Swap Gallery on: November 10, 2008 11:43:16 AM
Hi guys. Sorry it has taken me a while to take a picture of this, but I got my angel package from Kasie.

A 1-up and bbomb coaster (I love the B-bomb, no one ever does that), and the bottom knit piece is an ipod cozy with buttons to look like an old Nintendo controller.

It fits my ipod and headphones quite cozily.  Thanks Kasie Smiley
22  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Re: Fake wrap dress - New Look 6429 on: November 08, 2008 03:02:00 PM
I love this dress, especially with the 3/4 sleeves, I might have to make it myself.  And I actually really like it with those shoes, it would be too match matchy with red shoes imo.
23  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: non-traditional HOLIDAY cards! bearded ladies! on: November 08, 2008 09:50:23 AM
This is quite weird, but cool.  How did you print them?

Great idea! but I have a quick question for you. I've tried Aleene's paper glaze and mine did not dry transparent, it had semi transparent milky white finish to it. Did you notice anything like that or maybe I just got a bad batch?? i use diamond glaze and a 3D laquer but I was hoping that product would be the same. Just curious.

Actually, mine was a little bit milky.  That may not be apparent from the pic. I think it was because I put it on too thick?

The magnet might look a little better if you had cut the ribbon rectangular.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but the ribbon was an afterthought because the cardboard looked stupid... it's just wrapped around the cardboard.   If I did it again, I would have put the ribbon on first so I could do it more neatly.  Maybe in 4 years Smiley
25  California / California: South / Re: New to Area, looking for great craft stores on: November 07, 2008 03:29:43 PM
I've heard good things about Swains, an art store in Glendale that has a lot of paper supplies.  i also like Continental Art in Reseda, and Dick Blick (that's all over) -- both of them have a lot more than just traditional art supplies, such as screenprinting, modelling clay, glass paint, stenciling supplies, etc.

You should check out the fabric district downtown if you haven't already.  Blocks and blocks of fabric, stores devoted to just buttons... most of it is open to the public, although many shops close on Sunday.  The jewelry district downtown is also amazing, although I don't know if they have stuff for making jewelry -- I've only bought the finished kind Wink

Welcome to LA!

Santee Alley is not worth it, but the fabric and notions in the fashion district is definitely worth it.  The Michael Levine store is a favorite, but you can see a list of all the stores here:
link

Apart from the fabric district, there isn't much of interest downtown.*  I don't know the hotel you're talking about, but the reviews I'm seeing on google would make me look somewhere else.  Personally, I would stay in Santa Monica somewhere.  I don't know the subway, but the Big Blue Bus in Santa Monica is the easiest bus system in the city, and there are more nice places to eat and have fun in Santa Monica than there are downtown (in my opinion).  And yes, that's where the beach is! Smiley

So anyway, if you do go to the West side, I like: F & S Fabric on Pico (home and apparel fabric), Stampin from the Heart on Washington Pl (stamps and papercraft), El Cholo on Wilshire (great Mexican place), and The Little Door on 3rd (classy romantic restaurant) or Riva on Wilshire (another nice restaurant).

It isn't easy to get to all these places without a car, though -- sadly, LA is a car city -- and I do recommend renting something if you can.  If you attempt the bus system, use metro.net -- the trick is to extend your search criteria so that you are willing to walk up to 1 mile, in the advanced search options.  This way it will be smarter about reducing the amount of connections needed to get from A to B.  And be careful about time -- many bus lines stop running ridiculously early.

*edit:  I don't mean to pick on downtown, it's just not as tourist-friendly as some other places.
27  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / "I Voted" magnet on: November 06, 2008 10:35:26 AM
I love those "I Voted" stickers and I wanted to do something with mine.  So I made a magnet

I used Aleene's Paper Glaze, blue ribbon, and a piece of cardboard.  It didn't come out perfect, but I like it.  Did anyone else make any "I Voted" sticker projects?  (I saw the cookimistress' necklace, and that was quite awesome)
28  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / tampon cozy is dead. on: September 26, 2008 06:52:42 PM
This goes in a purse, so i think this is the right place to put this.  In this first pic, it almost looks like a whimsical clutch...

... but no.

I felt very yuck today, so I decided I absolutely needed a dead-faced tampon holder.   I like having something to keep my tampons hidden, and also keep them from getting mangled in my purse.  It's made of linen, with a satiny lining, and it holds four tampons.  I might add another lower button so that it can fold down smaller if it's only holding two, but I'm done for now.  Hope you like!

A bunch more pictures, howto, etc, on my blog.
