I've just made my first attempt at making a poppet! I made it out of red fleece, and it was a lot easier than I thought- this is only my second go at sewing curves on my sewing machine. I didn't manage to put the ears in, but it turned out much better than I expected. I just need to make hair and clothes next. I think fleece is a really good fabric to use for someone who hasn't got much experience with sewing, it was really easy to work with.

Here's a link to a picture, I don't think I can add pictures to posts yet.

52  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Re: buying first sewing machine...advice needed on: April 06, 2008 05:27:03 AM
Here's a link to a good discussion on buying a sewing machine- very detailed

http://www.dressaday.com/2008/01/how-to-choose-sewing-machine.html

I found it really useful when I was choosing my first (and only) sewing machine.

53  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / U.K. AND IRELAND / Re: Yorkshire Craftsters? on: April 06, 2008 03:50:07 AM
I'm in Bradford, which is actually pretty good for sewing stuff. There's plenty of small fabric/haberdashery stalls in the markets in town, and I live within walking distance of more fabric shops than I can count. There's a sewing machine shop too, as well as a repair shop just down the road from where I live. I don't really know what it's like for other craft stuff though. I tend to buy a lot of things online.

I am still another one who is jealous of the better availability of lovely fabrics and supplies in the states.

I've bought some felt from here http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Athena-Crafts that I was quite pleased with. You get 3 squares for 1 with 1 postage- but it's the same for postage no matter how much you buy. It's wool mix felt, which was quite thin, but really nice and soft feeling, much nicer than the acrylic stuff.
55  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / U.K. AND IRELAND / Re: Crafty blogs - looking for UK based blogs. Any recommendations? on: April 06, 2008 03:40:04 AM
I have a uk based blog too: www.faceofacat.blogspot.com

It's still pretty new, and it's mostly pictures of things that I've made but I'm going to be working on making it a bit more varied and interesting. Any suggestions for improvements would be appreciated, since I'm new to this blogging thing. My little sister has a blog too, which is linked to from mine and we are using them to share what we are making/learning about sewing with each other.

I'm still working up the courage to start making my own poppet, and I'm really impressed by how cute everyone else's poppets are. Yours is gorgeous- I love the hair, and of course the knickers.

Hi,

I'm new to Craftster, I was inspired to join by the poppets thread. How hard are they to make- I'm very much a beginner at this sort of thing.
