41  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Witch costume on: April 03, 2008 10:27:16 AM
In the process of digging through my fabric stash, I ran into this pattern that I bought a few years ago, but never got around to trying.  I had already bought the fabric so I decided to give it a try...yes, I know it is only April...lol...

Total cost of the outfit....$10 if that...there is a lot of fabric to the shirt and skirt, and I had to buy some boning for the corset...oh, and there is a zipper in the skirt...

Front:  The hat and cape were purchased after halloween last year...I think it cost me a whole dollar for both the hat and cape! lol.  The white fabric for the shirt was also from the dollar bin at Wal-mart and the skirt is made of a thin velvety material, also from the dollar bin.  The corset was the result of my first attempt at a corset and it came out very well I think, the only problem was my dress form sprung a leak (expandable foam) and got some on the corset (but since I am using it over the white shirt it doesn't matter.)

42  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Super cute summer dress McCalls 5001 on: April 02, 2008 09:31:17 AM
This is the same pattern that I used for my black dress, but I feel that I know more of what I am doing.  I knocked this dress out in about 3 hours, and did a much better job on the zipper (I think I am getting the hang of zippers).  For the hem I just used my rolled hemming foot on the sewing machine, and for the top I sewed on some bias tape...the color doesn't match the flowers, but I think it looks okay.  I have some extra bias tape that I think I will sew together and use as a ribbon at the waist.  I tried to find some wide satin ribbon to match the bias tape, but the colors were way off.  I really love this pattern!

Front:  I know this belongs in Recon since it was made from a bedsheet, but to me a sheet is just a big section of fabric, so I have a hard time justifying it as a true recon...

Back:  Love the job I did on the zipper, came out straight and no puckers in the fabric !!!

43  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / My first corset Simplicity 5006...for my little black dress WITH New Pictures... on: March 28, 2008 08:31:08 AM
I cannot begin to say how much I detest strapless bras... so I decided to try to make a corset to wear under my black dress.  This was Simplicity pattern 5006.  I still need to finish the top and bottom edges, and I am patiently (well impatiently) waiting for my grommet kit to arrive so I can finish it all off.  I'm going to add some padded cups into the corset as well.  I am pretty pleased with it considering it is my first corset...lol.

Front: edges need finishing...

Back:  Still needs grommets and lacing..but you get the idea

Finished Back:  Seems that it is still a bit too big...
44  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Little Black Dress for SIL's wedding...need advice on: March 26, 2008 06:45:37 PM
I decided to make this dress to wear to my sister-in-law's wedding (I'm one of her personal attendents).  Her colors are red and black.  My question is...should I add something red to this dress, or is this a case of less is more and just add the red via accessories....?  I have this beaded trim on the hem, the picture doesn't do the dress justice...

45  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / McCalls 5094 Easter dress on: March 19, 2008 08:37:37 PM
After completing the red dress, I decided that I really liked the style and decided to go ahead and make another one with this really cute flower pattern I found for $1 per yard at Wal-Mart ( I love wal-mart!!)  For this dress I followed the pattern for the skirt, on the red dress I posted earlier, I used the a skirt pattern from a different mccalls number.

This dress comes down just below the knee...again, I have to hem it, and put in a zipper...haven't gotten back to the store to buy the zippers yet, but I will before Sunday.

46  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / My first completed (almost) project. Pretty red summer dress. on: March 19, 2008 07:31:46 AM
Hey everyone! I did it!  I finished my first dress after making my duct tape dress form last week.  I still need to put in the zipper in the back, and I'm having trouble deciding on the length, right now it is mid-calf, but I'm thinking of raising it to just below the knee...  comments and constructive criticizms welcome!

Here is a close up of the front:
47  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / delustered satin...is this an endangered species??! Where can I find the stuff? on: March 18, 2008 10:36:33 AM
Okay, I am looking for the heavy satin (delustered satin), but I can't find anyone who carries the stuff  I live in the U.S.  Can someone please point me to a website that sells it?  I have certainly had no luck tracking down this elusive fabric on my own.  Thank you.
