I came in a bit late on this thread, but wanted to share that I am often asked to make little felted memorial pieces for people's pets, and they have all cried but have been more than glad to have asked for a little reminder of their beloved pets.
And for you to do that for your neighbour is just so lovely and heartfelt. So glad she liked it, I'm sure she loved it!

Technically speaking, the star needle has more sides and more barbs, so you would think that it would make felting all that little bit quicker!
 

I use a size 42 needle with barbs all clustered at the end of the needle for detail work.

Yes, I stiffened the fabric before I folded. Makes it much easier to handle, like paper.
That way you can evenly distribute the stiffy liquid over the flattened fabric. I also ironed it after it had dried out, cos it makes the fabric go a bit crumply. And I would apply the stiffy to the correct side of the fabric, so it looks even.
