1  Cell Cake Science in Completed Projects by ThirdMargaret on: December 16, 2009 07:06:13 AM
The 7th grade science project: Make a 3D cell, make it creatively.  For most of the kids that meant using a styrofoam ball and clay, and there's nothing wrong with that, but my girl wanted to make a cake!  As this wouldn't actually be eaten, we decided to use a mix and canned frosting...easier and cheaper than scratch! Of course the organelles had to be edible also, so we scoured the candy aisle for cell-ish ingredients.

We baked square layers since this was a plant cell.  I showed Em how to heat the Starburst and form them, then cut her loose!  She did most everything except for frosting the cake.  I also helped a bit with the actual attaching of the parts.  We had so much fun and her project smelled delicious!

We used the frosting as the cell membrane and Fruit Roll-ups for the cell wall:

Most of the cell structures were made with Starburst.  We also used gumdrops, Sprees, sprinkles, and a Hershey's Kiss!  The vacuoule is a blob of tinted frosting.

Thanks for looking!  I'm sure she'll enjoy your comments!

For Lilyvanilli's word-themed towel I chose a quote from The Secret Life of Bees, a novel that we are both fond of.  August Boatwright is a main character.

I added this to AlwaysInspired's tea towel!  Hope you like!  It was a fun image to stitch; I expect I'll do it again for an Irish friend.

The shamrock is a darker green, not black...I gotta learn to do some photo editing... Roll Eyes

Here's what I stitched on PaleAngelLex's towel.  I wish I had used more strands, but I was afraid the design would get too bunchy.  I was wrong. Undecided  It is done is blue, purple, and a blue and purple varigated floss.

Sonjabegonia scurried to the PO with PaleAngelLex's towel and didn't get to post a pic.  As I have her beautiful stitching currently in my possession, here's her addition!  I love it!

Here's my addition to sonjabegonia's towel.  She wanted things from John Hughes' movies and I have to admit that at first I was kinda stumped.  Then once I came up with one idea, others just started flying through my brain and I wish I could've stitched a few more! Cheesy  I went with my first thought, though, so as a nod to "Sweet Sixteen", a quote from that movie.

Hope this is in line with what you wanted, Sonja!

Thanks, y'all!  It was a fun bag to do, though a bit summery I realized once it was on its way...

When I signed on to angel for Nannetta I didn't expect to to receive a package in return, but she hadn't sent to her first partner, so I was super lucky!

Here's the lot including a pocket grocery tote made from a scarf and Candy!!

Close-up...isn't she Gorgeous?!

the pocket in a lovely Asian Ginko pattern ( i love Ginkos)

And the detail of the pocket:

Thank you so much, Nannetta!  It was an unexpected delight.  I will thoroughly enjoy everything!
