22  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Lolita Halloween costumes! on: November 05, 2011 02:52:38 PM
So this year, my daughter decided she wanted to be lolita for Halloween, and she wanted me to have a matching dress.  So like any good crafty mom, I raided my stash.  I had some of the Robert Kaufman cupcake fabric (I think it's Robert Kaufman), and knew exactly what I was going to use.  Thankfully I had it in 3 different colors, so I let her chose her's first, and she wanted the baby blue, which left me with the pink (Still not sure what to do with the green).  I had no pattern to go off of, and didn't know where to get a pattern, so of course, I had to make it up as I went.  I bought a Japanese Lolita magazine from Uwajimaya.  I did find some tutorials that came in handy, and unfortunately, I can't find them anymore. Sad  I even made the petticoat that goes under my daughter's dress.  I read lots of logs that said they were awful to make and painful.  But it wasn't that bad.  I found a video tut on Threadbanger that I used.  It took a couple hours, but wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.  I used wax paper as my pattern for her dress, lots of measuring.  Thankfully I didn't have to use my seam ripper a whole lot Cheesy
I also made her simple wrist cuffs, I made the pom-pom barrettes, since I couldn't find any in the stores.  They're just pom-poms glued to a hair clip.  I also made the rings she's wearing.  They're cake miniatures glued to adjustable ring bands.  I have also discovered what a joy a zipper foot is!!!  I don't know where this little device has been all my life, but what a life saver!!!  Zippers are no longer such a pain anymore!! Smiley
Most of the fabric for this came from my stash.  I think the only thing I really had to buy were the zipper, the blue ribbon and the eyelets that the ribbon goes through.  My dress is pretty much the same as hers, except the ruffles are in the back, and I made little ankle cuffs so I didn't have to take off my hemp anklet Smiley
For the ruffles I serged the edges, then basted, then gathered along the basting seam.  I then sewed the ruffles to the skirt.  This was the most time consuming part of the whole costume.  Her dress has 6 ruffles, mine has 8.  I think that's pretty much it on details, so here's the pics! Smiley

Here's the 2 of us posing together

Here's the back of mine with the tons of ruffles.  I think it weighed at least 5 lbs!!

Here's the back of my daughter's

Here's the front of hers

Here she is posing like some of the models in the Japanese Lolita magazine I bought

And just for fun.  One of my nephew's was an army man or sniper, so we stole his gun and were a little silly.

"Give me all your Halloween Candy!!"

Love to know what everyone thinks! Smiley (Sorry for the crappy quality of the pics, my camera doesn't seem to like low light)
23  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / another Anime/Manga swap on: October 06, 2011 10:41:20 AM

would anyone be up for another Anime/Manga swap after the holidays?  I could organize as long as it's after the holidays and hopefully my lovely co-org from last round would be willing to help again  Cheesy

Maybe another 6pt swap with like a month of crafting time??
Or maybe to change things up, a fill-a-flat-rate-box with anime/manga as the theme?  that sounds like it would be fun, but could be $$ so maybe it could be a small flat rate box with a couple small crafted items?  Any other ideas for this and who's interested??
24  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / a few necklaces :) on: October 04, 2011 02:41:40 PM
so, I've been hoarding the necklaces that I've made as well.  Now that I have something to hang them from to make it easier to see and take pics, I have finally gotten around to posting Smiley  YAY!!!!

butterfly necklace

I'm not sure what this stone is, but I paired it with pink freshwater pearls and a toggle clasp

apple necklace.  The pendant was actually given to me by my grandmother.  It was a gift my grandfather had given her.

the clasp

I think I may deconstruct this and find a chain for the pendant instead.  I think the pearls take away from the pendant

Hope you all like them Smiley

27  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / L from Death note on: October 04, 2011 02:16:59 PM
I have been dying to make him for some time now, and now I finally have my little mini L!!! <3  Grin Grin Grin  So happy.  He's my fav character from Death Note.   I'm debating on making Light, I think I may just because L needs a play mate.  I don't really care for Light very much, but L seems to like him and perked up at the idea of me crocheting him.  I just kind of made him up as I went, his hair and eyes were the hardest part.  I knew no matter what yarn I used it wouldn't look exactly right so i though maybe fun fur would get me the closest.  His eyes are OK, not completely  happy with them, but they'll do for now.  I LOVE his little toes!  I love making amis with toes!  They're soo cute!!  His arms are also jointed so they can move.  Ok, enough rambling, on to the pics! Cheesy

Here are 2 chain mail bracelets I made.  These were inspired by the Harry Potter books.  Snape is my fav character so these are my Slytherin chain mail bracelets!

with the colors reversed

They secure with toggle clasps, that look like the moon with crescents moons on either side of it.  I thought they would work well with my slytherin bracelets Smiley
Hope you all like them!
