Oooh, those look gorgeous. A quick question about salt-dough ornaments, though. I tried to make some last Christmas and failed miserably. The ornaments themselves turned out fine, but when I went to paint them with acrylics, they got, for lack of a better word, soggy.

Is there a way to prevent that? Do they need to bake again after you paint them?

I was really disappointed because I rather liked the way they came out other than that small hindrance.

Last year I checked out a fantastic book at the library about salt dough ornaments.  It said any time they get a little soggy (from humidity in the air, etc), you can bake them again to dry them out.  It recommended using a very low oven temp (200) for a very long time (such as putting them in the oven all evening for several days in a row).

The only thing I can think of is that maybe yours weren't dried out enough before you started painting them.  I suggest you give it another go.  :-)
12  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: Decorating a Room: Craftalong! on: January 11, 2010 02:01:04 AM
This craftalong will be just the kick in the pants that I need! I want to decorate my kids' room.  Right now it's pretty bare and boring. Here are some pictures I took earlier in the fall.  The only change is that we've moved the bird to the living room, so that space is even more empty!

I have some wall hangings planned and some shelves to paint and hang.  Any ideas or tip you have would be appreciated! :-)  I'm going for a tree theme since that'll be good for both boys and girls.

I think some window dressing would be nice! You could hang an over-extended rod above the window and hang some green curtains. Because the rod is longer than the window, the curtains will hang next to the window. That should create the illusion that the window is bigger than it actually is.

A rug will also break up the solid floor colour and could double up as a play mat. Maybe even add some bean bags. Bedding printed with colorful birds could add some color and interest. Some wall art would be nice too! Perhaps even a large mirror?

Thanks! These are great suggstions....especially the extended curtain rod.  I wouldn't have thought of that on my own.  I saw a rug I liked at Target...I should probably get it while it's still there.  I did get a lamp, a plant, and some art hangers (just clipboards to hang on the wall so I can change out the kid's artwork from time to time).

Three cheers for stoliedina and the Holiday Handmade Crusade!  I already have a half dozen ideas for 2010...not the least of which is the Advent calendar I started but didn't finish in 2009.

It never got beyond this stage...

...it's my goal to have it done before spring.

christephi:  the wheat pillow is so great!  what kind of wheat is inside?

It's hard red wheat.  I got it from the bulk bin at a local grocery store.  I like using wheat better than rice because it smells nicer (in my opinion) and would take a lot more heat/time to accidentally get cooked!  I put six cups of wheat in a ziploc bag with 3 drops of essential oil of lavender, shook it up, and let it sit a day before filling the pillows. It came out just the right potency of scent.

They were well received and the one for my dad got used Christmas night after he removed several thousand pounds of snow from our driveway!

So, as someone who is still (on Christmas Eve!!) trying to finish up a list of things, I say THIS CRUSADE MUST HAVE A 2010 VERSION!!!!  I am already making a goal to be finished with Christmas crafting my Nov. 30 next year!  Help me make it.  LOL

Hear hear!  Despite starting in January, I still had too much last minute crafting for peace of mind. I'll do better next year!

That's a pretty funny video, stoliedina!

I got some sewing done after all!

This cape and mask is for my 3-year-old's costume trunk (her Nana is making the trunk, but due to weather it won't be here in time for Christmas). She's been begging me for a while now to make her a costume to be "a super" AND a cape like the prince on Sleeping Beauty AND a magician's cape.  This knocks out a few costumes in one blow.  I drew out the patterns myself.

This is a ninja costume requested by both the daughter and the hubby.  I still have to figure out some way to make a ninja hood/mask.

I also made two wheat pillows with lavender and a bit of eucalyptus.  I bought one when I was in college for $30 and love it!  Of course, I made mine for a lot less than that!  I used plain muslin for the pillows and snuggle flannel (from JoAnn's on Black Friday!) for the covers. They are for my dad and his wife.

Dude - did you knit those stockings? If so, you are a goddess!

Christmas crafting has come to a total halt here - I have been laid out sick since yesterday morning! SO MANY THINGS TO DO!!!

I second that, the stockings are amazing!

My Christmas crafting has hit a wall too...I'm not the one who's sick, but my 3-year-old is down and between her and the newborn, I just don't have time!  I'm hoping to squeeze out the final things in the evenings when hubby's home to help.

I did finish the two canopies I was working on for my cousins' kids...and just in time since we exchanged gifts this past Saturday!

They have 3 boys apiece, and this is good for a nice range of ages.  One already said it's going in the reading orner.

Hi Crusaders.

I had a Christmas crafting meltdown today. I accidentally ruined two Christmas gifts that I've been working on for months and then when I trudged on, one of my cats went ahead and ruined it for good. Two weeks to go and I have nothing for my niece and nephew. It was a low moment...I can't even share the story yet. Right now I'm soothing myself with hot chocolate laced with fresh whipped cream and amaretto. I feel mildly better Sad

Oh no!  I hope you come up with a replacement to whip out between now and Christmas! If you need help, you know we're all chock full of grand ideas over here! :-)

I was beginning to think I wouldn't get any more Christmas crafting done this year...  I have a newborn and have been commissioned to sew my sister's wedding dress and a dress for the flower girl.  BUT I just found out that she moved her wedding from January 2nd to May 8th, so I now have a bit of hope for Christmas again!  Just please don't tell me how many days are left...I might just stick my head in the sand until spring. ;-)
