1521  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / FO:Knitted Guinea Pig w/pattern link on: February 20, 2008 11:17:44 AM
I made my first guinea pig. Made with Fun Fur and Red Heart Worsted Weight Yarn. The original pattern called for black eyes. I didn't have them so I made them with red buttons.

Pattern can be found here:

She had a couple of cool mouse patterns that I ordered also.

I made up the webpage for knitted gerbil pattern. If you make any gerbils, send me a picture or post it here. I would love to see them.

I know. It took me forever to find one. Follow the bunny pattern from the older thread. I used size 5 US needles. I like the cotton yarn. It seems to hold the pattern better. Knit up a 4 or 4 1/2 inch square and follow the directions on how to put it together. I used a size F crochet hook for the tail and ears. I might try a size bigger. The ears were not quit right. The ears are a small chain like 4 or 5 and sewed on shaping it like gerbil ears. You can sew or glue eyes on. For whiskers if you like, I used 8 lb. fishing line. For a catoy, you can put some catnip inside or even a little bell. It is still a work in progress but at least I found a pattern that works! I already have gerbil orders for the gerbil show in May.

I planning on making a webpage to add to my knitting site on how to make them up.

Yeah. I would love to see that. Also, just a thought. Young kids probably would like to play them.

I made them! I made two. The first one was last night. Used size 5 US needles on WW yarn. 4 inch square. It is the first one pictured. It looked a little small. Garter stitch. The second one I made this morning. Used same size needles but with white cotton yarn and 4 1/2 inch square. Made a little more chubber gerbil. I like the length. Needs improvement in the ears. Used a size G crochet hook for the chain. Maybe a different size hook? Any suggestions would be welcome. The cotton yarn seems to hold the shape better,
