11  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Gathered Roots - Round 5 (SIGNUPS CLOSED; MAIL BY 7/3/13) on: May 31, 2013 11:15:13 AM
I'm checking in!
I've got all my crafts planned, I'm waiting for some materials to come in the mail, and I'll be buckling down this weekend! I also have a long car ride coming up during which I can do some crafting, when someone else is driving!

I've been reading the back archives of the Herbwife's Kitchen (http://crabappleherbs.com/blog/) blog and wanting to do pretty much everything she posts about. My husband is already getting tired of hearing "The herbwife says..."

Does anyone else live in the south or are you all pretty much northerners with nice cool weather?   Smiley

Southerner here!

We've been having a pretty wacky spring here in North Carolina, with warm days in February and really cold days in April. This week it's been in the high 80s, so summer is clearly on its way. I'm pretty excited, because that means my little herbs that I planted in the early spring will finally start getting big enough to use! I'm tired of carefully picking off a few leaves here and there.

Just figured out I'm allergic to plantain.  Undecided

Oh no, so sad! Sad

I just wildcrafted an herb from alongside the alley behind my house - a surprise for my partner! Shhh!

I grow the culinary type in spades. I really have lots every year. Can it be used like ceremonial sage for burning? Also, can you tincture it and if so, what would you use it for? I know it's great as a tea for sore throat and a good hair rinse.

Sage is good for oral health too. Sage tea supposedly makes a good mouthwash, especially if you add salt.

Questionnaire sent! Thus ends a year-and-a-half swap hiatus!

Those patchwork spats are inspired! Smiley

Thanks! *blush* I patchworked the patchwork myself.

those realy are great spats did you use a pattern? i attempted some today and they... well lets say got walked all over Smiley

It looks like she used this pattern http://theindigophial.blogspot.com/2009/02/spats-tutorial.html but obviously made patchwork first.  Wink I would imagine they are quite tricky to make with all the extra seams in patchwork. Not that I kniw how tricky they are to make or anything. Wink

Yep, that's the tutorial I used! The seams in the patchwork didn't actually cause any problems when I put them together. What did cause me problems was her idea of seam allowances - they weren't included in the print-out pattern, so I had to add them on with extra paper; and she recommended 1 cm (I substituted 1/2 inch), which she said should be doubled in some places, making a 1 inch seam allowance, which is ridiculous and I didn't encounter any actual reason for it.

Anyway.

The best part is that she went way over in saying how much fabric you need, so I made too much patchwork, and thus have enough to make myself a pair!

Pictures time! DeceptiveFragileness really found and made a lot of cool stuff!

So the box contained a kick-ass utility belt and a cute little burlap emergency bag - looks like a good size for a bike repair kit, perhaps...

All the pouches had cool stuff in them!

A scarf with awesome old cars on it, Cthulhu tentacle jewelry (!), and my favorite, a beautiful hood! The outside is soft black suede, and the inside is gorgeous brocade (I LOVE brocade). The photo of the hood doesn't do it justice - hopefully I'll be a better model than the skull when I do my action shots.

The backs of the pouches are brocade too. The big pouch has a ton of little sub-pockets inside.

Hooray! Thanks for the loot, deceptive.fragileness!
