1  Re: Woodgrain Maori Fish Hook - Hei Matau in Needlework: Completed Projects by eukarya on: April 08, 2014 06:56:21 PM
Thanks for the comments! Cheesy

I've made a couple of other Maori-inspired designs this year and they're in green...that's what got me thinking about a Maori quilt.

It all started over a year ago when I stitched a set of napkins as a Christmas present for someone.

I kept thinking that I could do better so I've been working on them off and on throughout the year.  I'm definitely going to go for the quilt idea.

2  Woodgrain Maori Fish Hook - Hei Matau in Needlework: Completed Projects by eukarya on: April 07, 2014 05:55:39 PM
I embroidered a Maori fish hook in a woodgrain pattern.  I'm thinking of using it and other Maori designs as blocks in a Maori quilt.  I'm envisioning blue, green, black and brown for the colors and maybe using some nice batiks for framing.  It's still just an idea for now, but I'm liking it the more I think about it.  Quilting and embroidery are my two big things right now.

Please tell me what you think of it! Smiley

3  Lucky Charms for St. Patrick's Day in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by eukarya on: March 08, 2014 10:27:42 AM
I'm taking a guess as to which is the best board for this craft.  I made lucky charms for all my kids' classmates for St. Patrick's Day!

It starts like this:

We have tons of white clover growing where I live and I have a knack for spotting 4 leaf clovers.  This pile was from a single day of harvesting.  I found over 34 four leaf clovers in one pleasant evening outside.

I pressed them in my much loved copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (the thickest, heaviest book I own).  I slipped the clovers into penny sleeves (like for trading cards) and taped the penny sleeve to the printed card.  I designed the cards in PowerPoint ('cause I'm a nerd).

4  Spring Fairy in Needlework: Completed Projects by eukarya on: March 08, 2014 06:23:10 AM

I needed a little spring so I stitched this up during our last round of winter weather.

5  Rent-a-Zilla STOMP in Needlework: Completed Projects by eukarya on: September 21, 2013 05:47:55 PM
I was informed not long ago that all children at my kids' school may only carry the school-provided backpacks.  They are soooo boring that I couldn't bear it.  So, what's a crafty mom to do?

This is a Rent-A-Zilla from one of my favorite webcomics, Megatokyo. Smiley

I may add a city skyline in ruins at a later date.

6  This is the first bag I've made in ages in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by eukarya on: August 10, 2013 08:57:50 PM
I made this for my sister who is raising an autistic child.  I started out with the embroidered heart, then had to figure out what to do with it.  I had this floral canvas hanging around so it seemed like a good idea to use it up on a tote bag for her.  I attached the embroidery as a pocket.  The pocket is reinforced with a medium weight interfacing and is lined with canvas so it will hold its shape when loaded.  The bag itself is only lined with cotton, no interfacing so it's pretty floppy.

I hope she likes it when I give it to her in a few weeks.

7  Cupcake Dragon in Dessert by eukarya on: August 03, 2013 05:06:25 AM
So my oldest turned four and wanted a knights and dragons birthday party.  This was his birthday cake.  It's forty cupcakes with the scales all piped using a large round tip.  I used marshmallows for the eyes with chocolate chip pupils and sculpted tootsie rolls for the claws (I wish I'd had white tootsie rolls on hand for that).  It was a huge hit at the party and frankly not that difficult to make.  :-)

8  How to finish this? in Needlework: Discussion and Questions by eukarya on: July 21, 2013 08:41:23 AM
Hi all,

I embroidered this for my sister who is mom to an autistic child, but I am struggling to figure out how to finish it out for her.

I thought of sewing it on a bag, but I think the white would get filthy too quickly if it got toted around.  The bright colors don't really work with her decor for wall art.

I'm just stumped right now and would love any suggestions anyone can think of.

9  Maori designs in metallic silver in Needlework: Completed Projects by eukarya on: December 17, 2012 08:42:31 PM
Goodness, are my fingers tired and sore!  I got struck with some last minute inspiration to stitch Maori designs in silver on black napkins for my SIL from New Zealand.  I googled Maori symbols and freehanded these from what I found.  As if working with metallic thread wasn't bad enough, I got froggy and learned some new stitches for this (Double Chain Stitch and Herringbone Ladder Stitch).  I also learned that I've been doing my stem stitch wrong for years and learned to do it right (so much more efficient!).

10  Sweet little wreath in Winter Holidays by eukarya on: December 04, 2011 07:21:41 PM
I thought I'd share my latest fun creation.  I've never decorated a wreath before and gave it a shot at a party this weekend.  My ribbon came out a little wonky so I may have to fix it.  More likely, I'll just be lazy and pretend it looks perfect. Wink

I didn't have any time to go pick decorations out at the craft store, so I improvised with a pack of candy canes, some ribbon I had tucked away and some pine cones from my backyard. Smiley

Thanks for looking! Smiley
