1  Re: Doctor Who Craftalong 2012-2014 and Beyond! in Craftalongs by margaron on: August 23, 2014 08:24:10 AM
I'm going to take a kick at a Doctor Who quilt, which I expect to be the death of meas I want to do some serious embroidery work on it, so I don't think I'll be making another cross stitch for a while. However, I definitely intend to continue crafting Doctor Who, I just caught up and now I'm 150% obsessed with it! lol

So I made this bracelet:

It features two hearts per Tardis and a handy dandy sonic screwdriver Wink

Project Name: Thank-you, you're awesome!
Project Page Link (if available): n/a
Brief Description: This was a little card I made for my boyfriend just for being awesome. The actual card is made from scrapbook paper, and the dinosaurs are freehanded from construction paper. I glued them down but I didn't have a glue stick only a glue pen and it discoloured the paper. Sad I then cut little bows out and folded the centres to make them 3Dish and glued them on, as well as the little heart. Then I took some fancy swirly glitter-glue and wrote Thank-you and decorated the bows. I also glued an insert into the inside to liven up the centre and some dinosaur stickers but I forgot to take a picture before I wrote the mushy stuff in soooo.... unfortunately you don't get to see the inside Tongue

Project Name: Kombucha
Project Page Link (if available): n/a
Brief Description: I used the SCOBY I created for another class to create my own Kombucha! As I explained in my last post, Kombucha is a healthy drink that helps detoxify and cleanse the body. There are many different recipes but this is the one I have:

2 gallons of sweetened tea (Boil the water and add 1 cup of sugar use black or green tea and nothing with added oils)
2 kombucha mothers (AKA scobies, or mushrooms) (see my SCOBY post for instructions on how to make one)
1 cup of starter liquid or last batch of Kombucha
2 large 1 gallon glass jars
1 thin kitchen towel, coffee filter, cheese cloth etc. to put over to keep foreign bacteria and bugs out
15 oz of fruit juice (if you're double fermenting)
6 quart sized jars with lids (any size bottle or jar will do, so long as you\ve got enough to hold 75%-80% of your brewed kombucha)

-Boil your water and steep your tea.
-Add your sugar while the water is warm to ensure it dissolves well.
-Wait for your water to cool to room temperature, if you put it in while it's warm you can kill it.
-pour your tea into your jar(s)
-pour your starter liquid or part of your last batch of Kombucha into the jar
-carefully place your SCOBY on top of the liquid (it's ok if it sinks, it's still doing it's job, your SCOBYs just won't stick together)
-Cover and leave until a film begins to form on your tea, taste daily to find your preference

Double Fermentation:
-Pour your Kombucha into glass jars leaving only a small space for air at the top.
-Add a tablespoon of sugar OR organic fruit juice
-Tighten your lid on so no air will get in
-Leave for approximately 7 days (depending on the temperature of your brewing area)
-Leave to taste, your Kombucha should come out fizzy

(unless you're me and you left too much air at the top -___-)

Project Name: Water Marble Nails
Project Page Link (if available): n/a
Brief Description: I decided to give something a go that I haven't done in a couple years, and had difficulties with before. This time it worked quite easily! (YAYYYYY!!!) I decided to water marble my nails again. Not only are the nails the blue/green colour of water, they swirl like waves and for an added watery bonus, were created by dropping nail polish into a cup of water Smiley They take a while, and are a bit (lot) of a messy process but the finished result is really cool! Smiley

I made this a while back for _Kitkatpro for the heroes and villains swap, but she never got it... Sad yet another package lost by Canada Post... It took me quite a while as it was the first thing I've cross-stitched in about six years, I was quite happy with it.

SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin/ Bulgaria
Project Name: Kombucha SCOBY
Project Page Link (if available): n/a
Brief Description: [Disclaimer: If you do not have patience I would not recommend growing your own SCOBY, but rather purchasing one. This takes a long time.]

If you've looked at the picture already, you're probably going 'ewwww...', 'what the bloody hell is that?!' or other such things. I have made a Kombucha SCOBY. What the heck is that? I'll start with Kombucha, it's a tart, lightly fizzy drink made from fermented tea. The drink includes many health benefits and acts as a detoxification process as well. The SCOBY is a Symboitic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast, the slimey thing in the picture, it is what helps make the drink so healthy and it is used in the fermentation of the tea.

I grew a SCOBY from scratch rather than buy one to begin brewing my own Kombucha, it has taken three weeks to make/grow and be able to use.

The 'recipe':
- Boil 4 Cups of water (they say distilled or filtered water is best, but I used regular old tap water and it worked fine.)
- add 1/2 cup of sugar (this is what the Bacteria and Yeast feed on)
- steep 4 black tea bags in water
- let cool to room temperature
- add 1 cup of starter liquid or store bought Kombucha
- put into GLASS jar, DO NOT put lid on, it needs to breathe
- cover with a towel and elastic band and tuck away in a warm dark place.
- check over the next few days/weeks to make sure no mold is forming (it will look like mold on bread, fuzzy and the whole bit). Temperature will change this time from days-weeks. Mine took about three weeks.
- when it becomes 1/4- 1/2 inch thick (or thicker, doesn't really matter, you can leave it longer but 1/4 inch is the minimum) remove from jar, keep 1 cup of liquid dispose of the rest.

you're Scoby is 'complete' but always growing and alive, with each batch you make, your SCOBY (aka. Mother) will produce more SCOBYs (aka. Babies), you can use your mother SCOBY for a very long time, brew after brew or you can use the new baby scoby and pass along the mother to someone else, or dispose of it.

You are now ready to make Kombucha!

Project Name: Free handed bracelet
Project Page Link (if available): n/a
Brief Description: This bracelet includes nine colours, originally I intended to make nine diamonds in it too, but found it would be much too large if I did, so I only did seven.
Project Picture:

Also, I have a question about the DA. and I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. I know there's the required craft time to move on to the next challenge, but how do I go about establishing that I've taken that time before moving on? Do I post a sort of proposal like OWLS and NEWTS or do I just post my crafted item and wait the allotted time before continuing?

Thanks in advance to whoever can answer Smiley

Project Name: Delicious Chocolate Chip Cookies
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: I grew up in a single parent household, almost everything was made from scratch because it was cheaper. When we were little my mum taught us to bake and me and my brother used to fight over who got to dump the cup of whatever into the bowl, so in honour of that I baked some chocolate chip cookies! Smiley Unfortunately they are not the ones my mum makes, but they are still delicious. The recipe can be found here, enjoy! : http://allrecipes.com/recipe/tiffanys-chocolate-chip-cookies/detail.aspx

Project Name: The 60 Hour Snuggy
Project Page Link (if available): http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=431803.msg5168396#msg5168396
Brief Description: Named such, as I attempted to make one before and to satisfy curiosity timed every time I actually sat down to work on it over the two months I did. This crocheted snuggy took a large amount of yarn (approximately 3000 meters) aka. about 4 1/2 of those giant balls you find at wal-mart. I used a pattern I made  once before and it is crocheted in entirely of Half-Double crochets. The final product ended a little bit longer than anticipated at about 81 inches and about 50 inches wide. My project breakdown went out the window when I got sick and then had my birthday, forcing a huge amount of last minute crocheting to be done (my fingers are still a little sore and I finished about 14 hours ago... ). But the deadline was met successfully  Cool (and I feel like a boss for cranking out so much last minute and finishing it).

Project Picture:

Unfortunately this is the only picture of the finished product I have as I did an 8 hour push from 10:30pm- 6:30am and come 6:30am I wasn't having any more of the non-sleeping shenanigans. The birthday boy loved it! I'm so glad I stayed up, though my hands weren't liking me too much by the end, my fingers had slowed drastically and my eyes were heavy, it was worth it. Smiley
