1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: HP Craftalong ~ Spring Semester - March 1 - May 31, 2016 on: May 31, 2016 02:20:17 PM
Apologies for such a huge last minute project dump. I have been crafting throughout the semester, but just have not had time to upload any pictures. It has been fun matching crafts to prompts, as I had not been crafting with any of them in mind. Quite pleased with the outcome though Smiley

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Alchemy
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Action #3 (many directions); unicorn
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Rainbow Unicorn
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: I am so happy with how this little guy came out - he was a present for a friend to give to his girlfriend, so was created for someone else. There were many steps to making him and a whole rainbow of colours Cheesy
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Apparition
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Action #4 (3 parts - background, decoration, word); yellow, green, print
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Space Prayer Flag
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: Made for the prayer flag swap, I chose the word Space from my partners list. I chose the decoration because I use my garden when I need space and have found that crocheting clears my mind.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Arithmancy
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Apple
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Apple Crumble Muffins
Project Page Link (if available): Link to recipe - http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1263686/rhubarb-crumble-muffins
Brief Description: We usually have an abundance of rhubarb during the harvesting season, so quite often make these muffins. They are not too sweet, but sweet enough, and the crumble topping is lovely. This time I had some apples which were definitely passed their best, so substituted the rhubarb for apple. I discovered that apple, weight for weight, is bulkier that rhubarb, so I ended up with more mix than usual, which is fine by me. They also came out a little sweeter, so next time I would reduce the sugar a little, unless I was using cooking apples rather than dessert.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Astronomy
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Action #1 (about an hour); sparkle, ball
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Crochet Snitch
Project Page Link (if available): Link to pattern - http://www.innerchildcrochet.com/patterns/the_golden_snitch.php (there are loads of great free patterns on this site Cheesy)
Brief Description: When I found a pattern for a crochet snitch, how could I not make one! My first attempt was tiny, so I tried again with a slightly bigger hook, this one ended up about 15cm from tip to tip. The white has a glittery speck through the wool and I used a gold thread along with the yellow wool.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: COMC
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Action #5 (includes bright green)
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Sunflower Square
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: Since starting to learn to crochet, I have discovered that crocheting squares is letting me learn different stitches without getting too bored with a large project. I also complete the piece, rather than have lots of WIPs, which is good. This one is from a book a borrowed from the library, with over a hundred different squares. The background is green, with many different golden petals.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Charms
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Action #7; cake, cinnamon
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Rhubarb Crumble Muffins
Project Page Link (if available): Link to recipe - http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1263686/rhubarb-crumble-muffins
Brief Description: We always seem to have too much rhubarb during the season, so I am always looking for new recipes. I have made this one a couple of times now and it is becoming a favourite. We started off with one small rhubarb plant five years ago and last year we split it as it outgrew it's bed, so this year, double the rhubarb Cheesy
Project Picture: This was yesterday's crop and the muffins made the same day

Class/Challenge/House Pride: DADA
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Turquoise flower hexagon
Project Page Link (if available): Link to page - http://www.stylecraft-yarns.co.uk/crochet.htm
Brief Description: Another square, but this time a hexagon Cheesy I am putting these all in a bag and when I have enough, I am going to make a giant patchwork blanket. This is one of the parts of the current Frida's Flowers CAL over on Stylecraft.
I think my actual crochet fear is well and truly on the way out, so the next step is taking on a large project like this craftalong and actually complete it! I need to choose the colours I want the finished blanket to be before I start though - I don't dislike the colours they have picked, but I am thinking I may do it in a monochrome colour range.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Divination
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Diary, statue, stone
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Little Visitor Journal
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: The little visitor swap completed in mid-March, so whilst I was taking photos throughout the stay, I always leave the journal to the end, even though every time I take part I promise myself I will work on it throughout the swap!
I picked the suit of swords, which is about the matters of the thought and mind and represents the mind, perception and observation - all perfect for a diary/journal. If you are interested in seeing inside, there is a video on Bearnard's facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010665963359
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Flying
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Buttons
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Cute octopus
Project Page Link (if available): Link to pattern - http://www.thefriendlyredfox.com/2016/02/amigurumi-octopus-baby-toy-free-pattern.html?spref=pi
Brief Description: I just fell in love with this little guy, but I didn't like the crocheted eyes, so used some buttons instead. I think next time I may do spiral tentacles, rather than the flat, but still adore him.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Herbology
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Make-a-mess Prayer Flag
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: As part of the prayer flag swap, one of the conditions on feedback is that you have to make one for yourself. I decided to go with "make a mess" because whilst I love crafting, it has to be neat, with square corners and finished edges, so I made myself this flag and ripped the material, didn't finish the edges and fringed the edge. (The crochet flower was one of the choices for the Space flag that I didn't use.) The finished flag makes me happy and reminds me to relax and enjoy the process.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Muggle Studies
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Australia
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: One of my favourite movie directors is Baz Luhrmann, who is from Australia. My favourites of his are Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom. One of the recent PL swaps I was in was for a country that you have either visited or always wanted to visit. I have been to Australia and I am desperate to go back.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Potions
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Rainbow Pocket Letter
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: This was for our very own edelC - we agreed on a private swap, so that she could have a go at making a pocket letter. I went with a rainbow theme - painted background (painted as one sheet and cut up) and went through my stash to find the coloured elements. There are two elements to a pocket letter - the ATCs, which stay in the pockets, and the gifts tucked behind, which are removed to use for further pocket letters.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: SOAR
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Rainbow, purple
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Rainbow tails
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: I am submitting the rainbow spirals as a separate class to the completed unicorn (posted for Alchemy) as these alone took me 6 evenings work!
Rainbows speak to me and I am always drawn to them, I like crafting them and when asked what my favourite colour is, I always respond with rainbow. Whilst they have always "spoken" to me, I didn't realise they had so many symbolic meanings, in Buddhism, Native Americans, Celtic, just to name a few. Whilst reading about them, the meanings that resonated most were creation, harmony and hope.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Transfiguration
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: Action #2 (layers); letter, desk
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Office Pocket Letter
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: The challenge for this pocket letter was to reuse office supplies, for example, old envelopes, junk mail, old leaflets, etc. I used an old leaflet that had been left on my desk, some old envelopes & stamps, the back of my old notebook, some bubblewrap and some old train tickets.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Detention in the Dungeons - May
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Watercolour pages to backgrounds
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: I had painted the watercolour pages a couple of months ago, but had not got around to cutting them up. Some are for pocket letters and some are for inchies. The cut up picture is just one of the sheets, so I am set up for a while with all three Cheesy
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Pinch of Floo Powder - Bangladesh
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Mother, Maiden, Crone Prayer Flag
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: This was made for my second partner in the prayer flag swap. Whilst this is not my religion/belief, when I saw Mother, Maiden, Crone on my partners list of words, it felt right. I wasn't sure about the understated colour choice, but I am now pleased I stuck with it.
Project Picture:

Class/Challenge/House Pride: House Unity
Slytherin Scavanger Hunt: n/a
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Sorting Hat
Project Page Link (if available): Link to pattern - http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/harry-potter-sorting-hat-doll-sized-crochet-pattern (this one is not a free pattern)
Brief Description: If there is one thing that unites (or maybe the complete opposite?) all the houses, it is the sorting hat. This crochet sorting hat is tiny - the brim is about 7cm diameter, so it sits perfectly in the palm of your hand.

Both paintings are so beautiful, your grandmother is going to love them. Sending her lots of healing thoughts, the same thing happened to my aunt a few years ago, the hidden injuries are so scary.

Wow, I knew I had been absent, but I didn't realise just how much!

I have just caught up on 11 pages of posts including some amazing items, some yummy foods, some well justified rants and some fab news - congrats MistressJennie on your new Moderator status and on buying a house.  Grin

I have been crafting, so will have some projects to post, but need to co-ordinate myself to get pictures from camera to computer first!
4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Prayer Flag Swap Round 6 Gallery on: May 20, 2016 12:40:35 PM
Apologies to P_E_S_T, as I received this beautiful flag a couple of days ago, but have only just had time to take pictures and sit down and get them on the computer.

Isn't it beautiful? The word she picked was Gratitude and I just love the combination of fabrics and embroidery and the ribbons and beads. Thank you so much
5  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Prayer Flag Swap Round 6 Gallery on: May 11, 2016 12:20:16 PM
I'm waiting to post my flag until Seeuudee has received one I sent, as it has a common element and I don't want to spoil any of the surprise. But I may get too impatient at the end of the week and post it anyway.

Well, you don't have to wait any longer, I received the most beautiful flag today Cheesy Hopefully flag number 1 has found it's way to someone who really needed it!

On to the flag - Antidigger went with Balance and came up with this beauty

The background looks like hand made paper and has such great texture. (We had discussed that I don't hang my flags outside, so the paper will survive.) The dark blue is a very sheer fabric. The quote reads Balance lies twixt sharp and sweet.

The balance is embroidered and the rest of the words, possibly shrink plastic? And I love the little bird - well, I love it all actually.

Thank you Antidigger for a fantastic flag and thank you Wulf for organising us all.

So many amazing flags, I love seeing all the different interpretations of the words.

I finally finished my own flag - I went with "make a mess", which is to remind me that crafting does not all have to be about the neat. I really struggle going outside my comfort zone and messy is definitely outside!!

This is mostly recycled - the flag base is torn strips from an old pillowcase, woven, the ribbons are both pieces that people have given me (most friends know I collect any bits that can be crafted with Cheesy), all of the beads were from old necklaces and the crochet flower and leaf were practice pieces from Antidigger's flag. I really struggled not cutting the fabric or finishing the edges neatly, but now I am pleased that I resisted, I love the finished effect.

Such amazing flags from everyone, I love seeing all the amazing techniques used and the variety of colours and fabrics and textures. Such a happy, crafty place to be.
