21  COOKING / Dessert / At my son's request... on: March 20, 2011 05:05:32 AM
He asked for a dinosaur cake for his 20th birthday-here is the picture he sent to me, asking if I can make one like it.

It was wayyy too much for 9 of us so I simplified it with two layers instead of the three and no sheet cake under the dino. This is what I made him...
Here is a picture of the birthday boy and a front picture of the dino

23  COOKING / Dessert / Looking for a no fail whipped cream icing on: March 12, 2011 02:57:43 PM
Does anyone have a recipe for a grat whipped cream icing?
I just finished a cake I wasn't happy with due to the whipped cream going soft too fast!

24  COOKING / Dessert / Re: Periodic Table Cake on: March 12, 2011 02:53:09 PM
This is awesome!  I am a science teacher too and this would be great when teaching the periodic table Smiley

My kids are currently doing an assignment to build a 3D cell, and I hope I have dropped enough hints that at least a couple of girls make it with cake, chocolate, icing or jelly.
My daughter made hers with gumballs! We were at the bulk store counting colours forever!

Great job on the Periodic Table! Your teacher should have made it a contest, having everyone make it out of something edible!

Great job!
27  COOKING / Dessert / Re: Cousin's Cake-#2 this week! on: February 25, 2011 05:35:28 PM
I tinted royal icing in the pink and black separate icing bags.
Printed numbers off the computer and used write-on transparency film for overhead projectors laid on top of the prints. I traced the pink stripes first then traced out the black. I made two sets, the second set I flipped the print over and traced them once again giving me a finished back to the numbers.
Once they were dry enough to peel off the transparency I flipped them over and sandwiched the two sides together over bbq scewers. Once they were firmly stuck together I piped a bead around each number to seal them together and finish the edges.

I must say I loved how this cake went together and looked when finished! I almost didn't want to stack them so you could see the layers separately to get a good look at the zebra print!

Thanks for the great comments! I hear it was really good! lol

30  COOKING / Dessert / Building block cake for cousin's grandson's 1st birthday on: February 20, 2011 11:21:56 AM
My cousin asked me to make a cake for her grandson's first birthday, she wanted building blocks but gave me creative freedom so here it is!
The T is a chocolate cake with vanila almond cream icing, then the other cakes are cherry chip, confetti, and plain vanila cake-the fifth cake is a combo of the others (the left over pieces! lol).
The animals are to represent the letters, not many animals start with N-don't realize it until you have to make one! lol
All edible, the animals are made of fondant!
