1  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Super Owen! My boy's new cape. on: April 02, 2011 07:23:27 AM
So yesterday morning, my son was wrapping a blanket around him, kind of like a cape. So I asked him if he wanted me to make him a cape. He said "a red cape." He's 22 months. I'm not sure he really understands what a cape is, but the master made a request so last night I made this:

I used this tutorial but I changed the size because my guy's a shorty.

He's really enjoying it and wore it over to Grandma's house.

It looks a little orange, but it's more of a barn red. The hubby scraped the finish off. I painted two coats of raw umber milk paint, topped it with one coat of red milk paint and sealed it with a couple coats of tung oil.

7  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 48 ENTRIES / Tiny Terrarium-- piggy's new home! on: March 01, 2010 05:02:36 PM
A former coworker, Phoebe, turned me onto the terrarium craze. Seems like everyone's doing them. I'm all for jumping on the bandwagon if it's a wagon of coolness. And the tiny challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to make a mossarium.
I figured I could use a baby food jar, but it was 2 1/2 inches. Grr. So I went down to The Scrap Exhange, a creative reuse center, and found the perfect little jar. And a piggy. Total cost? Seventy-five cents.
Piggy seemed a little sparse by himself. I got some toothpicks from my mother-in-law, cut them up and glued them together to make a fence. But... it's a little moist inside piggy's home and the fence fell apart. So instead of getting some outdoor glue, I cut some thin strips of raffia and tied it together. Talk about a PITA!
It still needed a little something, so I figured I'd add a flower. I cut up the hubby's Mountain Dew can and used an industrial staple that I had yanked out of something and Voila! A pretty little flower. I hope you like it!

8  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / 9 months in the making... a diaper bag! on: February 04, 2010 05:11:03 PM
I started this before my son was born. He's now 8 1/2 months. I used Butterick pattern B4560. It didn't actually take 9 months to do, but I found all the pockets annoying to do (and yet so desirable to have), so it was hard to get motivated. I got the fabric at the creative reuse center where I worked, so the only things I bought new were the thread and the keychain swivel clasp.

One of 7 pockets!

lotsa room inside!

and I'll be able to find my keys Smiley
9  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Owl crib rail guards on: January 31, 2010 06:52:07 PM
So my son has learned to stand up (but not sit back down yet). And so he started eating his crib. Shocked

I made these as quickly as I could. So quickly, that after sewing up and trimming the seams on the first one, I realized the ribbon ties were on the inside. Angry But I have since fixed that, and now he chews on the rail guards instead of his crib.

If you look closely you can see the dog hair that is already on it. Undecided
