I am about to attempt to sew McCall's 5838 it's a girl's dress in view A. The requirements for the fabric call for 1 1/2 yds for a 45" and 1 1/4 yds for 60" plus 1/2 yd for contrast. I have 2 yds of a melon colored gingham and no contrast. I was hoping to be able to do the contrast pieces or the other ones on the bias and the other going the right way. Since I do not have extra fabric I am trying to be conservative with what I do have.
The pattern says it is a self lining bodice. It has a bodice front, and two front stays. The directions have you attach one bodice front to one front stay, than it says to reserve the other stay for lining, which gets attached later. Does this mean once everything is finished the bodice front is the piece that shows when worn, the one stay is in the middle, and the lining is on the inside? Does this mean I can use other plain white fabric for the two stay pieces with out it showing? Thank you for your help, I know this post is kind of long, and hopefully not too confusing!
