1  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Discussion and Questions / painting on sunbrella/colored canvas?? on: February 27, 2009 05:55:31 PM
i've been painting with acrylics on unprimed black canvas lately and i've been looking to experiment with more colorful backgrounds.

that sunbrella stuff looks interesting, because it's heavy weight, comes in a bunch of different colors, and wouldn't fade over time, but i'm wondering whether the waterproofing or whatever chemicals they put in it would prevent the paint from being totally permanent. has anyone had experience doing any kind of painting or other projects with sunbrella?

or does anyone know a good source for sturdy, tightly woven canvas (like heavier than that kind of stretchy home-dec stuff) that comes in more colors than just black or white?

thanks so much for any suggestions!
2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / crazy wall hanging on: April 13, 2008 11:04:40 AM
i painted this with acrylic paint on black unprimed canvas...it's a little under 6 feet tall, not including the the black border...

here's the whole thing

and some close ups (sorry for the big pics)

i couldn't hold the camera straight so the pictures are a little warped, but you get the general idea.
and just for reference and because it took me FOREVER (partially because the unprimed canvas soaked up the first layer or two of paint) here's the brush i used:

i'd love any feedback/comments...i've never worked on black before and i liked the process, but like i said it took a ridiculously long time.  is this something worth trying again or improving on??
thanks for looking!
3  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / watercolor paper pulp? on: April 12, 2008 08:07:52 PM
so i have a ton of old watercolor paper that's just gotten too dirty or wrinkled or whatever to use for painting anymore...

i was wondering, has anyone ever tried making paper out of watercolor paper pulp?  i don't know enough about watercolor paper to really predict what would happen, and i don't want to make a huge mess...so if anyone has guesses or has worked with any thick or sized paper before, i'd love any type of advice!

thanks so much!
4  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / i made a sweater! (kind of) on: March 06, 2008 02:46:49 PM
so i just retaught myself how to crochet in december, and ended up with this big box of yarn from my grandma...so i made a sweater!!(ish)
i used like two and a half balls of yarn and made it up as i went along, and i'm afraid to try again because i feel like i was mostly just lucky that it ended up looking like an article of clothing...but anyway, here it is!

i just noticed that the front part is all curled in front, it doesn't always look like that.
what do you guys think? i'm ridiculously proud of myself for actually finishing something but i'm not sure if that means it's wearable in public

thanks for looking!
5  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / fun rainbow book! on: March 05, 2008 04:11:51 PM
so i'm really excited with how this turned out, but i have no idea whether i should actually put anything in it...

it goes from this....

to this!!

do you guys think i should just leave it how it is, or should i do something more with it?  i mean, a blank book isn't exactly the height of entertainment, but i don't want to ruin it.

thanks for looking!  i'd love to hear any suggestions..
6  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / one of those back pillows on: March 01, 2008 11:19:19 AM
so this was my first time using a sewing machine or a pattern, and i like that i can actually use what i made!  don't ask me why i decided to use this fabric, i had a ridiculous time trying to sew with it, but that's okay.
the shininess (and the fact that i've been sitting on it) make it look a lot more wrinkly than it is in the photos.

horrendous pic of piping..

i haven't sewed up the bottom yet (i've been putting it off for a long time) but when (if) i do, it probaly won't look so lumpy around the base...

but i'm proud of my first effort! any comments/suggestions for what i can improve next time?  (i'm never using shiny fabric again, for a start)
7  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / three little paintings on: February 21, 2008 04:46:36 PM
i've never had to patience to paint the sides of canvases, so i decided to cleverly disguise my laziness with...paper! (yeah probably not the most original, but whatever)

it looks like there's a white edge, but it's just the flash.
then i found three little doodles from my sketchbook that kinda matched, copied them onto my little 5" x 7" canvases, and...voila!

(sorry about the flash)

what do you guys think...does the paper work? i'm kind of interested in using it more often, with different colors and stuff...and it's easier than trying to paint the sides to match
i'd love to hear any opinions!
8  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / mixed-media extravaganza on: February 15, 2008 06:23:11 PM
so i've been working on this painting for a while...with gouache, watercolor, ink, charcoal, chalk, oil, colored pencil, marker, etc.  now that i'm close to getting finished, i noticed that the middle looks kind of naked, and i'm wondering what i could do to fix that...anyway, here's what i have at this point

i really think i need to do something with the middle right section to kind of tie it together, but i don't want it to look too busy...any suggestions??
9  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / fun with prismacolors! on: February 14, 2008 06:44:34 PM
so these are kind of old but i just discovered them for the first time in AGES...and they reminded me of my big marker-loving phase awhile ago...so voila!

this was just for fun...there's some silver on there too, and the circle things are all totally freehand (i draw a lot of circles)...the camera flash kinda washed out the colors, they're a lot brighter in real life

this one got made into a poster for my high school...it's about 12" x 16"
[

and one more...my gray prismacolors! (i love them)

thanks for looking!
10  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / bear keychain on: February 01, 2008 02:36:14 PM
i'm counting this as my second crochet project ever because i'm taking a break from my first one...but this was the first time i'd ever successfuly tried to follow a pattern.
i'd seen a few other examples of this bear from http://www.rheatheylia.com/index.php?page=patterns&id=2 and thought it was the cutest thing ever and looked like something i would be able to manage...so here he is! (along with my dazzling manicure, apparently)

i used a size 3 hook on this yarn that's 60% nylon and 40% wool and stuffed him with little pieces of an old sock so he's completely machine washable, if that ever happens to matter.  he turned out pretty tiny, so i decided to make him a keychain, put a little heart on his belly and give him to my boyfriend as an early valentine's day present because i was so excited to actually finish something that i couldn't wait...he named him harry heartful
