...Phew! It's a good thing there's a crafty Mommy slash Wife on hand!!
So, a few months back we moved all of our computer stuff into a different room in the house, one that is cooler during the hot Florida summers. This room had no curtains and the windows in the previous room were much bigger and I had gotten those pull-down roller shades cut for them, so I couldn't very well transfer them. For one window I had some old curtains I'd made for our old apartment in my "I don't throw anything made of fabric away" bin so that was an easy fix and for the other one I decided to get creative. I pulled my husbands USMC flag out of that very same bin, we've been wanting to hang it up since forever but haven't found an appropriate place in this house, so I asked my husband if I could sew on it if it meant displaying it again and he agreed. So I went to my local thrift store and bought some khaki sheet for like a buck or .50 or something great like that, and I spent the entire duration of the movie 5th element hand-sewing away (this was pre sewing machine era for me), carefully centering the flag in the middle of the sheet. It was nice looking and so I hung them up... the bottom was a good foot away from Remington's (my 2 yr old lab-retriever) cage, I swear!!! But the next day after we'd been at a friend's house for a few hours we come back and the curtain, or what was left of it, was inside of Remy's cage and he had quite literally eaten half of it. I was furious because of the work that I'd done and my DH was furious because there was going to be a glare of his computer screen now
and because his Marine Corps flag was ruined. We didn't have money to buy any more supplies either. So it took me a couple days but I got creative. I took a roller shade off the one window in the previous room that the sun doesn't catch because of the back porch outside it- DH severly opposed this because of the hideiousness of the shade so while he was at work one day on my day off I spent a few hours painting on it!!! It's not perfect, turns out that it's reaaaally hard to paint on this surface because it's SO super smooth. Also I know that the red circle is stupidly off kilter, but I didn't plan
on making anything beyond the emblem itself the rest just kind of happened as I went, so I didn't preplan any measuring. I do plan on going back and trying to make it more rounded. So with no further ado- the pictures:
Here's my imps- the one on top is the good girl, she can be trusted to roam the house as she pleases while we're away. The one on the bottom is the baaaad boy. We tried a muzzle before the cage and he managed to fish coke cans out of the trash and EAT them in their entirety (save the top and bottom) THROUGH the small hole at the end of his muzzle... and whole loaves of bread from the pantry as well, this dog is not normal:
Unfortunately, I wasn't a part of craftster back then, so I didn't take any pictures of the curtain in it's prime or when Remy devoured it, but here's the new cover:
For those of you that don't know, this is the Marine Corps emblem
Sorry for the extremely long back story- I can't help myself with details sometimes. Thanks for looking!
