The masking tape works pretty good, although if the bit of tape on the jar is too small, they have a tendency to shift or even slide off. The outlines worked best, but are a lot of work. I made a teeny set of jars with monsters (inspired by http://www.theanticraft.com/archive/samhain06/missmonster.htm) and the little tiny circles for eyes wandered off sometimes.
Also, I'd recommend extra wide masking tape so I wouldn't have to make rows and rows of it to cover a larger area.

Thanks for posting that link. Like I said I really wanted to try etching, but to be honest I'm not crazy about the stencils you find in the etching section at the craft store. And I didn't want to invest in an etching kit either. So this gives me instructions and the patterns are endless by using the masking tape.
