1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / FIESTA Birthday Party! on: January 23, 2013 06:53:29 PM
okie dokie, so my wonderful husband is turning 33 on feb 4th and we plan on having a birthday party for him on feb 2. i know, a day before the super bowl and we were thinking of having a sunday, super bowl/birthday party but he's a chef and i'm sure his work is gonna be super busy and we're not sure what time he'll actually get out of work =/ not to mention, i'm sure our guests will have multiple SB partys to go to (most of us are niner fans, lol!)

anywho. so yes. feb 2. 33 years old. not a major milestone but my hubbs is totally deserving of a great bday party! i told him to decide on the food; do we want to get something or cook ourselves? of course being a chef himself, he decided to cook the food! and he decided on mexcian. since he decided on mexcian food and it's a birthday party we decided to have it be a fiesta themed party. we're both mexican, but any help i can get on making his party awesome would be great!

we got the food down. "street" style tacos (taco truck style? basically warmed up corn tortillas topped with some chicken or carne asada, onions and cilantro, and salsa), rice, beans, salsa verde, salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole, bean dip, PLENTY of tortilla chips. i super want to buy a pack of brown paper bags and put a handful of tortilla chips in them so guests can just grab them and munch!

first question: what's a good dessert to go with this theme? besides flan. or fried ice cream. or tres leches. while looking up ideas on craftster i saw the idea of churros. any recipes my fellow craftsters have tried? and in general it doesn't have to be a big dessert since we're having a birthday cake also.

second question: decoration ideas!! we've found some things at our local hobby lobby and party guys stores. (lol, i totally want to get little fake moustaches!) but any ideas on hand made decorations? oh! anyone have any great tuts on diy pinatas?

third question: speaking of pinata, what would be some good ADULT type items to stick in there? lol, not condoms! (yeah, my dirty mind thinks like that, lol!) we were thinking of some candy still for sure. maybe a few dollar shooters..i think we've saw some for a dollar before...basically we don't want little toys, so anything you guys can think of besides candy? if if it's something diy, i'm down for making a few of them =)

i believe that's the only questions i have. any help/tips/ideas/input would be GREATLY appreciated =) thanks everyone!
2  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Magnet Swap?? on: May 16, 2011 09:50:32 PM

So, I'm not entirely sure why, but for the past month or so I've been on a magnet
kick! I've received some pretty awesome magnets in some recent swaps and that's just helped to propel my magnet kick even farther, lol! So, I was wondering...would anyone be interested in a magnet swap?? This is what I had in mind:

It wouldn't be a super big swap; a small one. I'm thinking maybe 6 magnets? 5 can be centered around your partners likes/themes/interests/etc. The last one can be a magnet of your choice. I know marble magnets are (were?) popular, however they are kinda, sorta, easy to make so I was thinking 3-5 marble magnets would equal 1 magnet? Also should there be like a set rule that creativity is a must? I mean that, it is super easy to just print out pics or whatever of your partners themes/interests and stick them on some magnet backing. 1 or 2 would be okay, but I think people should stretch their imaginations a bit more than just that.

One more thing, if there is enough people interested in getting this swap going, would anyone be willing to organize (hopefully following most of what was just said/mentioned Smiley)?  If enough people want to do it and no one wants to organize I am totally willing, the only thing is I have an 8 month old son who keeps me mighty/insanely busy during the day so the only time I'd have to the any organizing would be after 10pm. Also, I'd have to keep the swap small, like maybe 10, just to insure I have enough time to give everyone in the swap my complete attention. Well, let me know what you all think! Happy crafting everyone! Grin
3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Cute and Creative way to tell my parents I'm pregnant! on: February 17, 2010 01:58:46 PM
So, after about two years of trying the husband and I are finally pregnant! It's our first and we're super excited. He already knows; I called him at work the minute those two lines popped up, but I haven't told my parents yet. I'm trying to think of a cute and creative way to tell them rather than just blurting it out, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas?? I just got done reading a past thread about this and got some ideas, but was wondering if anyone had any new ones?? Here's what I'm thinking so far (thanks to the old thread!):

Wearing a shirt that says "Guess what?" across the belly (or, "I'm so crafty, I make people.") and see how long it takes for them to figure it out!

or

Buying/making a little pair of baby booties, putting them in a regular shoe box, ask my parents if they want to see the new shoes I bought and, again, see how long it takes for them to figure it out, haha!

Again, if anybody has any other ideas or ways they told their parents, please share! Oh, and if it helps, this won't be their first grandchild. I have a 9-year-old nephew, so anything saying grandma/grandpa won't really help since they're already grandparents. But it will be their long-awaited second grandchild! Thanks guys =)
4  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Stocking Stuffer Ideas (What are you making?? on: December 13, 2009 03:06:15 PM
Hey all! I'm curious as to what you all are making to put in your loved ones' stockings this year?

I'm completly stuck as to what to make my husband to put in his stocking. Of course he's getting some edible goodies, but I also wanted to make him a couple things. I already made him a little coupon book, but am out of other ideas! I'm hoping some inspiration will strike upon reading your creative ideas =) So...share away!

5  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Super last minute costume help!!! (Snake Eyes from G.I. Joe) on: October 23, 2009 07:24:44 PM
Okay, so I was all happy that both me and the husbands costumes were all finished and figured I could just chill and work on my midterm project report all next week before we leave Friday. Well, my brother (who along with my sister-in-law are the King and Queen of last minute) just called me and asked if I could make my nephew his costume. He wants to be Snake Eyes from G.I. Joe (the movie). Here's a link: http://www.costumeexpress.com/G-I-Joe-Snake-Eyes-Classic-Muscle-Child-Costume/60738/ProductDetail.aspx I guess it's like the number one costume this year and its pretty much sold out everywhere. It also doesn't help that they waited last minute to try and find one. Annnnnnnnd, my nephew wants the muscles in it. Anyone have any idea whatsoever how I can go about making it? I 'm thinking the pants will be fairly easy (hopefully) but I have no idea how to do the top and especially that hood thingy. My bro and sil still have some of my nephew's past halloween costumes (Iron Man and Wolverine) so I'm thinking the easiest thing to do would to be to use the muscles from those costumes, but I still don't know how to go about it. I'm sure I can cut up one of those costumes and use it as a pattern, but...I dunno. Any help/tips?!?!?

Thanks for any info!
6  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / What are you gonna be for Halloween??? on: October 18, 2009 06:24:16 PM
So, I was curious...what are you all gonna be for Halloween? I'm gonna be Little Red Riding Hood that got attacked by the wolf! And the husband is gonna be a zombie. How about you?

Forgive me if there is already a post like this and I was just to blind to notice!
7  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Little Dead Riding Hood on: September 27, 2009 01:43:31 AM
So I decided I want to be Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween. Only, you know, not fortunate enough to get away from the Big Bad Wolf! So I'm gonna have scratch marks on my arms and chest, maybe neck. The husband and I decided to play around with the makeup today to see what we could come up with. We used liquid latax, toliet paper, makeup (my regular, every day makeup!) and, of course some blood!

Oh, we also used Lippsstix 's awesome tutorial. After I showed the husband that post, he knew he wanted to be a zombie!
8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Food Gift Ideas on: October 22, 2008 10:09:22 PM
okay so, last year, for a few members of our family, my husband and i made cookies. they each got gingerbread men, chocolate chip, cinnamon, and oatmeal. we wrapped them up in boxes and i included recipes. this year i want to do something different.

i was wondering if anybody had any good food gift ideas? something besides cookies. i was thinking peppermint bark (i believe that's what it's called...) still something sweet, but it's different than cookies. or those recipe jar thingys. you know, the ones with all the ingredients inside them to make soups and such. anybody have any other ideas? what are some foods you've made to give out as gifts? sweet,salty,spicy...whatever! share any and all ideas! thanks =)

# of Flakers: 1

Ecstatic has, unfortunatly been flaked and needs and angel! She's been so nice in being extremely patient. Here's her info:

Details of your Person of Choice:
Name: Agnieszka Gutthy (my mom)
Age: 50 (just turned in August)
Gender: Female
Favorite Colors: She likes all the deep/dark colors - dark browns, dark greens, dark blues, deep reds, black.
Colors they hate: No pastels or pinks or anything that would be used at Easter or in baby showers.
Hobbies: She reads a lot - a total bookworm, like me, lol. She also studies languages, and knows like 7 of them. She loves learning and research, and if it were up to her, she'd be a permanent University student. As it is - she's the next best thing - a professor at a University.
Favorite movies/t.v. shows: She watches the Home and Garden channel a lot. But, otherwise, she's not that into TV. She loves books more.
Favorite games: Other than "forty thieves" which she plays on her computer (it's a card game like solitare) ... she doesn't play any.

Favorite singers/bands: She likes all classical music, especially Opera. She loves Cesaria Evora.

Favorite books: Oh gosh ... the list would include millions. She reads everything - except the popular paperback fiction like mysteries or romance. She hates those. She's one of those "intellectuals" who like reading "smart" books.

Any other favorites: She loves coffee. She can not function with at least 2 cups of coffee in the morning.

Please make a list of items your person of choice would like to receive:

1. Bookmarks - she's always reading up to 10 books at a time and it can be hard to keep track.
2. Laptop sleeve. She just got a new MacBook, but has no sleeve for it.
3. Checkbook cover - hers is so boring, lol.
4. Cosmetic or travel bags are always good as she's always traveling to conferences across the US.
5. A mug cozy - coffee can get hot! She has an oversized mug she uses ... not sure how that would translate for measurements. But, I could always measure it.
6. Embroidery wall hangings. She used to have this sign in her office that said:
Answers: $1.00
Short Answers: $5.00
Long Answers: $10.00
Correct Answers: $50.00
Dumb looks are still free

She lost it, though, during a move, and has missed it since. I was going to make it for her, but if anyone else has embroidery skills - that's good too.

7. Potpourri sachets - the kind you put in closets or drawers to make things smell good. She loves lavender.

8. Anything Feng Shui. She loves all that stuff. And Buddhas - she has so many of them, it's a collection at this point, lol.

9. Sweatshirts, blankets, socks. She loves wearing that stuff around the house and having a blanket on top too - she gets cold easily, for some reason. Even in Louisiana weather. She's a huge sense of humor, so funny/ironic sayings on sweatshirts or blankets are good. She'll get any "professor humor" out there online.

Things your p.o.c. would hate to receive: Anything girly or with busy flowery prints.

Does your p.o.c. have any allergies?: Nope.

Any other info about your person of choice youd like your partner to know?
Well, she's my mom. So obviously I'm biased, but I think she's the most wonderful person in the world. She's originally from Poland, but we moved to America when I was 5. And she raised me as a single mom.

So, she's a very independent, intelligent woman. Right now, she's compiling a book of essays on  literature of exile in East and Central Europe.

If you have any questions at all - I always answer PM's.

Thanks to anyone who is willing to be an angel! I appreciate it =)
