21  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Completed Projects / Re: Frayed denim wrap skirt on: March 24, 2008 07:12:45 AM
Thanks guys!  I really enjoyed making it, and it didn't take me long at all.  I worked on it Thursday and Friday night after work, so in all it probably took me about 7 hours to make - not bad for just learning!  I like the fraying on the bottom, but thought the white threads hanging down looked poor, so yesterday I trimmed all the white threads from the bottom so now it's a soft looking blue fray.

I'm teaching myself to sew since my wonderful hubby bought me a sewing machine for Christmas!  I bought the book Sew What Skirts but ended up putting it on the shelf for about a month since I didn't quite understand it yet.  I made a few things using patterns so I could become somewhat familiar with making something and how they are supposed to go together.  Then I bought 5 yards of denim (I'm still not sure what possesed me into buying so much) and I pulled my book off the shelf and this is what I made!

It's the frayed wrap skirt they have in there.  I decided I didn't like the idea of snap tape and found some wonderful brass sun buttons and used those instead.  Unfortunately I don't have a very good picture of those and I tried getting a close-up with my awful camera to no avail.

I hope you like it, I do, it's pretty comfy and I'm pretty proud of myself!

Great job!  It does look like it's supposed to be stitched the way you did with that fabric.  I think you're on to something!

Empire waists are awesome on your body type!  I've seen some wonderful dresses and tops with that cut - sadly they make me look 18 months pregnant...it's so weird, and really too bad because they are so cute.

OOOOOOOOO that helps a lot KittenKaboodle!!  It sounds like I'll have a lot of trial and error before I get it right, I'll have to hit a good muslin sale!
27  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Split Skirt? on: February 12, 2008 03:16:17 PM
I love split skirts, I have not found a pattern for one.  But I got to thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to adjust a pattern for a pair of pants.  My question would be - do you start to flare out at the waist or the hip (or someplace entirely different)?

That's gorgeous, is it the brown sugar that gives it the emulsified look?
