24  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Stitch And BOTCH / Re: Am I overreacting? (about a purse someone made for me) on: September 03, 2008 04:54:05 PM
i don't really have any advice as i'm not too clear on etsy buying etiquette, but i just want to reassure you that you're not paranoid. it looks nothing like the inspiration and, to me, doesn't seem worth $60. i'm hesitant to say any more due to the "if you can't say something nice" rule, so suffice to say: you're not overreacting.

27  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: How did you all learn?? So inspired! on: August 19, 2008 05:26:36 PM
when i was a kid, i learned through a class at the big fabric store in town. i'm a classroom-learner, so it was perfect for me. my mom also taught me a lot and i would learn by doing as well. if i wanted to be a ______ for halloween, i would get the pattern and fabric and my mom would help me if i needed it.

recently, i've taken lessons at a great place in san francisco called stitch lounge. it helped me a lot! if you're the type of person that works well in a structured environment, it's a really helpful way to learn. most sewing class places have machines, too, so you can figure out if it's really a hobby you want to pick up without spending a bunch of money on a machine.

i also definitely recommend just trying. start with patterns that say "easy." some people start without patterns, but i'm hopeless without everything being spelled out for me. if a friend has a machine, just bring some scrap fabric over and play around with his/her machine. there's a bunch of great books, my favorite is by the same people i took classes from. they're all about reconstructing clothing and starting with the basics:

hope this helps!
28  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Re: the "it looks like you made it" bag on: August 19, 2008 04:58:31 PM
what a great friend! (please read this with the intended sarcasm.)

i also think you should take it as a compliment. it's one of a kind and lovingly created and that kind of stuff is much better, more expensive, and well made than stuff you can get in the stores.

GREAT job!

is this the same as the sui generis store in san francisco? just curious to know if local designers/stores post their stuff on craftster.

also, your work is really great. i can't even imagine i'll ever be good enough to even dream about making my own patterns. love all your stuff!

I am also really glad that you like the bookmark, cause as soon as I read your styles and likes I drew up a graph and got to work, I am really happy with how it came out, I think I may make one for myself. Cheesy

i love the bookmark. the image is so clear - it's really neat!
