I'm tempted to defect to Team Fandom, but will wait to see who remains loyal to Team Wordy...

I've been very unwordish lately (I've only been able to manage about a paragraph a night of the book I'm reading) but extremely fannish...

Here's a little blurb from stage critic Archibald Haddon regarding Somerset Maugham's play "The Circle" which starred Ernest in what he considered his most difficult role up to the time of his memoir; it was a serious role:

from "Green Room Gossip"  1922

Yep, Ernest definitely looked and acted weird, which is probably why he mostly stuck to comic or character parts throughout his career.

Somewhere or other I ran across mention that his favorite role was that of Walter Hoover in "Murder on the Run/They Drive by Night " (1938).  I've praised this film earlier in the thread. It's a great part for him, a deadly serious role in which he portrays a serial killer striving to appear normal as he stalks his victims.

Here's a review from our times:

'The movie is at least two-thirds over before one of the main characters appears, the former schoolmaster Walter Hoover, played by the unbelievably urbane, stick-figure-thin Ernest Thesiger. Our first view of him is of his hands, so you only see what hes doing pasting newspaper clippings about lurid murders into a scrapbook: Dance Hostess Strangled with Silk Stocking, Bedroom Mystery. But when his face is finally revealed, the entire audience seemed to sit a bit straighter, and we stayed that way through the end, reacting with open delight to this characters every movement, his every phrase. Ernest Thesiger has that effect on people, even those familiar with his work. He seems scarcely human.'

Nobody crazy here:

I'm glad you're enjoying it.  Smiley I'm obviously completely in love with him, so it's nice to find others are interested as well.  There's tons I don't post in this thread that is on my pinterest:  http://www.pinterest.com/hl0833/ernest/    I'm working up to making a website dedicated to him, as I think he warrants one.  Whenever I think I've found all there is to find, there's a whole lot more. I try not to editorialize too much, even in my own mind.  I keep expecting to find something horrible about him, like he was a white supremacist or something, but so far it looks as if he led a blameless life, in his own very special style.

The magnets are quite wonderful, painted on cork, they are of two of my obscure bug favorites - Ironclad Beetle and Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly.  Smiley
