2016 Annual DeStash-Along

Macro Threads 4 by nickcummins, on Flickr

Stashes are an inevitable part of the crafting process.  They start out small (that skein of yarn you just had to have, even though you don't know what you are going to make with it) and slowly grow to epic proportions (two fat quarters, three tubes of beads, four yards of corduroy, 5 jars that are too good to recycle, etc. etc. etc).  After a while you may realize that you have enough pipe-cleaners to re-wire your house, and that you can't put your coat away because the hall closet is entirely full of batting, pompoms, and googly eyes.  Non-crafters might see this as a problem, but we see it as a wonderful opportunity for creativity.

Whatever your craft (embroidery, beading, sewing, welding), type of stash (fabric, yarn, bits of string too small to save), or motivation (frugality, boredom, freeing up space for more supplies) we hope you will joint us here as we spend the year shopping our stash to make marvelous things!  There will be monthly themes and challenges to inspire you or be ignored as the spirit moves you, discussions, encouragement, and happy crafting.  We've been doing this since 2009 and had a lot of fun along the way.  We hope you do too!

Claiming my spot - I never post much to the thread itself, but I like to use this space to keep a record of what I've made.

TheMistressT - I love that headband (and having serious stash envy for that fabric)

alwaysinmyroom - How do you have time to make so many awesome things?  It's all I can do to get my shoes on the right feet most days?

stillatthetop - Ooh, I like your crafty room idea - it sounds really cozy!

2015 has been an interesting year on the stash front.  I went back and looked at my goals from page 2... Yeah, I achieved none of those.  Roll Eyes Oh well!  My fabric, ribbon, and lace stash ballooned, since I absorbed a bunch of stuff from family and friends, and some purchases of my own.  Yarn remained at a steady state - I added about as many skeins as I used up.  I managed not to buy any more pretty paper (that way madness lies) and even used up more than last year, but it didn't put a noticeable dent in the hoard.  Here's to productive DeStashing in 2016!

I'm working on the 2016 DeStashAlong!  Please let me know if you have any ideas for improvements, themes, or challenges!

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Apparition
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Pussy Willow Dress
Brief Description: The print on this dress reminds me of the woods behind my grandparents house in winter, back when I was a kid.  They look very different now (in a not nice way) so it's nice to have that reminder.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Astronomy
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Dotty Dress
Brief Description:  The fabric for this dress is bright red, with even brighter red polka-dots.  On the whole it looks a lot like a strawberry, not that that's a bad thing...

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Detention - December
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Sweater Stripe Dress
Brief Description: I made enough little Christmas dresses I considered decorating my tree with them in place of ornaments.  After all, they're about the right scale.  In the end, this was one of my favorite "decorations" for my dolls

Sweater Stripes by Trillian, on Flickr

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Flying
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Fix-Its
Brief Description: Yes, these are nearly identical to a dress I made last semester.  When I was getting ready to send that dress off I noticed I'd nicked the skirt when I was trimming the seam allowance, and it had been completely hidden in the gathers.  Well, I couldn't send it out like that, so what to do.  Attempt 1(right hand picture) - Picked apart the dress and re-used the bodice and lace with a new skirt piece.  You can't really predict how the motifs are going to fall, and I wasn't really sure I liked it.  Attempt #2 (left hand picture) re-used the original skirt, shortened, with slightly longer lace and a new bodice.  I ended up sending my first attempt off, but I needed to see them side by side to decide which one worked best.  Not how I was expecting to spend my time!

Class/Challenge/House Pride: History of Magic
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Pink Checkered Dress
Brief Description: This dress turned out sickeningly sweet, which is an apt description of how you'd feel after eating a ton of treats from Honeydukes and the wash it down with some tea and pastries from Madame Puddifoots.

Hello All

I am so sorry for being Missing in Action since August.  I got sucked into my etsy shop vortex (which has resulted in the fabric stash growing rather more than I expected) but the DeStashing goes on!  Please excuse the massive project dump as I spam the DeStash projects I've done in the past four or five months.  Only about half the pictures are showing up in my preview (the others are just showing links) but maybe that's a good thing.  It helps avoid picture overload.

On the Knitting Front:

And, of course, the doll clothes:

Whew!  That's a lot.  And the year's not over yet!  I promise not to get so far behind in the future so I don't bombard you with quite so many projects at once.

Crochet Snowflakes by Kristin Roach, on Flickr

For: Your Home
Challenge: Take a deep breath, step back, and marvel at all the wonderful things you've made from your stash this year.  How did you do on your goals from January?  How has you stash changed and evolved?  What was your favorite part of the DeStash-Along this year, and how can it be improved for next year?

Class/Challenge/House Pride: CoMC
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Winter Wonderland Dresses
Brief Description:  I sewed 19 doll dresses during the first 20 days of November, in addition to my usual evening social obligations.  This was a much bigger undertaking than anything I'd tried before.  The last four dresses I sewed were four sparkly little snowflake dresses, all in one sitting.  They're pretty small individually, but it definitely felt like a big project.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: CoMC Extra Credit
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Holly Stripes
Brief Description: I got the fabric for this dress from my mother's fabric stash.  I used to love going through that box when I was a kid, and it was nice to see some old favorite scraps as I was digging through on my quest for Christmas fabric.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Detention - October
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Pizzelles!
Brief Description:  I've never had pizzelles at a tea party, but I imagine they would go quite well.  I made a batch with my mom and my grandmother when I was visiting for Thanksgiving, since I don't have an iron of my own.  My car smelled of anise all the way home - it was marvelous.

This link has pretty much word for word my Nana's (great grandmother's) recipe.  Nothing particularly sacred or secret about it.  We used a new brand of anise extract this time though that wasn't quite up to snuff.  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/9947/pizzelles-ii/

Class/Challenge/House Pride: PS #10
Team: Knights of the Flaming Moonfish
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: More Mitts
Brief Description: After finishing up my mitts for PS #5 I still had half a ball of yarn and no idea what to do with it, so I just kept going and made a second set.  I make my good friend Kathleen a pair of mitts nearly every Fall, and this year she and her boyfriend can have (more or less) matching pairs to get them through the Ohio winter.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Slytherin Soiree Autumn Masquerade Ball
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Christmas Plaid
Brief Description:  Something made out of fabric?  I can do that!
