2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / kafka portrait that may or may not be finished on: October 28, 2004 09:32:51 AM
this is the first painting i've done since i got out of undergrad... and it's been a few years! i'm not sure how i feel about this piece.  some days i like it, some days i don't.  i sketched the outlines and visible lines (like in the cheeks and around the nose) with permanant marker directly on the canvas - never done that before and i like the effect - but i'm not sure if i should do more work to the face to make it more, well, better, pardon my grammar, or if i should doctor the background or what... suggestions?

3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Adaptation of slide necklaces on: September 22, 2004 07:17:13 AM
Ha ha!  The day is mine!
After seeing the slide necklaces on craftychica, i promised i would make one for myself, but wasn't satisfied with the size and ssape of the slides.  So i went to my local Ace Hardware and had them cut some glass for me - (it measures about 1 1/4" by 1 3/8") I used tin foil tape on it, and voila!  The only trouble was, it initially didn't occur to me to dip the eyepin in glue before sticking it through the foil.

I think i'll try soldering next.

Anybody recognize the picture?
4  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / The Captain is in! on: September 22, 2004 07:10:47 AM
Behold the transformation of James T. Kirk into a groovy stencil for my groovy shirt:

And here's another picture to give you a better sense of the whole thing:

I like it.  It's a good way to channel my geekiness.   Wink  I need to touch up some of the paint, though.  Sigh.
5  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / readymade's billboard canvas on: September 16, 2004 11:21:30 AM
on the readymade website (www.readymademag.com), they are selling recycled billboard canvas, which i would love to work with - has anyone else here done anything with it, and what's it like to work with, and any ideas of something to do with it other than wallets and messenger bags?  or any ideas of where to get larger sheets of it (these are 4'x4')?
6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / i wanna make a menorah on: September 15, 2004 09:28:04 AM
any ideas?  i want to make a menorah for my apartment (i've been using a kiddie one that i bought several years ago and i think it's time to have something a bit more grown-up)... and i'm not sure where to start.  my decorating scheme is hipster-retro-mod with furniture from ikea and the 1950s and a huge superman mural and all sorts of goodies, and i'd like something to go along with that.  reconstructed out of old kitchen appliances, perhaps?  hmmm.
7  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Lois Lane Belt on: September 14, 2004 08:27:32 PM
This is my favorite thing I've made in a long time.  I took an old belt and an old calendar, and with some measuring, cutting, laminating, and gooping, I got this.  There are more images from the comic along the sides and front (including Lois setting the table and Superman flying out through a secret trap door in their kitchen).  Rest assured, no comics were harmed in the making of this belt.

8  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Humphrey Bogart stencil... on: September 14, 2004 08:24:39 PM
Woo-hoo!  This is the first project I made that i'm posting.  I think it came out ok, but I've since heard words of stenciling wisdom will make my next project look better.  Incidentally, does anyone have any tips for stenciling white on dark fabric?  I'd like to do this design again but get the paint more even and stuff.

Does anyone else watch Bogart movies anymore?  If so, what's your favorite?

9  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Award ribbons! Help me make them into something beautiful! on: September 06, 2004 02:02:42 PM
Ok, so I was the nerdy kid who always did stuff for 4-H and won ribbons for it (all right.  i know what you're thinking.  i know, everyone won ribbons.)  and i have a bunch of them lying around and i would like to give them new life as something useful... and suggestions?

Thanks, y'all are swell.
