4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Budget Meals Swap? on: March 08, 2009 09:10:46 PM
Anyone interested in doing a swap focused on budget-friendly, nutritional meals?

I'm constantly trying to find new recipes that don't put a dent in the family food budget, but that provide us with delicious, nutritious meals.  I'm thinking of a swap with a short craft time, so minimal points (possibly just two), but with a big "information" requirement.  I.e., recipes, healthy eating tips, frugal shopping tips, "locavore" eating and etc.

If you're interested, let me know and I might start it up once I get done with my current swap!

7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Cowboy Baby Shower from start to finish on: August 05, 2008 04:57:13 PM
Well, I've gone and done it.  I've volunteered to plan and execute the baby shower for my hubby's boss and his wife.  They're due at the end of November and the date we've set for the shower is Sunday, October 19.  I've got a little over 2 months to plan it and I'll be out of town three weeks total in that time period.  I'll be working with a budget of $300, unless more funds are offered by the other hostess, so thank goodness the location is free.  I've already discussed the theme with her and she chose these invites:

So, it will be a cowboy-themed baby shower.  I've got the location picked out, will be meeting with mommy-to-be and another friend who volunteered to help in two weeks (I'll be out of town on business next week), and then I'll get down to the knitty-gritty after that.

I will be crafting my way through this baby shower, so I will be hunting craftster and begging fellow craftsters for ideas, inspiration, instruction and good ideas for non-alcoholic stress relief!   Grin

Here's the to-dos as I see them now:

1.  Confirm location
2.  Prepare guest list and make sure announcements are prepared for church bulletin.
3.  Order invites.
4.  Send out invites.
5.  Order cake.
6.  Plan menu (beg people to help with the food prep so I have time to decorate and pick up all the extras).
7.  Plan games.
8.  Plan and craft/buy decorations.

I'm sure my to-do list will become much  more specific as the ideas flow.  This is just my starting up point.  Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated!  This is my first time organizing an event that wasn't a wedding reception (beer makes everything look nicer) or that didn't require the buying of lots of meat for the bbq and kegs.  Yikes!!  Don't know what I'm getting myself into!!

She's asked for a diaper shower, so the gift will be a diaper cake that I will make when I get back next weekend.  It'll be stored in the closet in a trash bag until its needed.  It will be a huge relief to get that out of the way.
8  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Felted wristlet - first time felting; lots of pics! on: July 23, 2008 11:41:53 AM
I am currently in the Givers/Needers Swap Rd. 3 and ghilie sent me a wonderful package.  I got the package yesterday morning and by this afternoon have this to show for it. A felted wristlet!  This is my first felted item and although it's not perfect, it's definitely a start.  All I have left is to sew the side seams up and it will be ready to go.  I worked it up in a single crochet last night and then felted it with a load of towels this morning before work.

Thanks, ghilie!  Because of you, this new foray into felting is possible!

I used the brown yarn she sent me for the body and the red yarn she sent me for the accents.  (I know it looks gray-ish on my desk, but it really is brown.)  It is a prototype for an idea I had for a swap and I will be modifying it a bit to suit the needs of my partner.  BTW, this only used about 1/2 the skein of yarn to make.  Talk about economical!

Here's the post with all the stuff she sent me in it.

9  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / $5 Journal Recon - Pic Pudgie! on: May 14, 2008 09:12:37 PM
Not the most extraordinary of crafts, but it made me happy.

Found this journal for $5 - 350 lined pages, how great is that?!  But I wasn't exactly excited about the cover:

So, some beading wire, some glass beads and a bit of scrapbooking paint later:

Although, I did like the old cover enough to not cover that, I just disassembled the journal and the puppies are now the inside back cover.  Besides, the little dachshund at the top reminds me of my baby, Texas "Ranger" Captain Augustus McCrae:

10  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Which sewing machine to buy? on: March 12, 2008 09:50:01 AM
I hope I'm putting this in a decent place, if it's not I will gladly move it.

I'm looking to buy a basic sewing machine in about a month or two.  I have NO idea where to start.  I would like to keep it under $250 (that does not include shipping) and don't want anything too fancy.

The main purpose for now will be light-weight window coverings, pillows, etc., but we'll be starting a family soon and it's always been my dream to make baby/child clothing for my offspring.  I would also like to be able to use it on novelty items like stuffies and handbags.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks, Kim
