6  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Discussion and Questions / morning glories? on: March 07, 2008 05:44:06 PM
i've been thinking since my last post....when i was a kid, we had beautiful morning glories that opened every morning and turned toward the sun.  i'd like to plant them and train them to vine up my garage wall, but i'm afraid that they will go crazy and grow everywhere.  can you plant other plants in the same bed with morning glories?  or will they take over everything?

thanks so much!

okay...my husband and i are renting a house where the previous renter was a gardening genius (he also had WAY more time as i have a 7 month old).  so far, i have managed to kill two potted plants, a grapevine and today i FINALLY pulled out the most gigantic, overgrown tomato plant (well, not entirely. there are HUGE roots still there, but there was a 7 inch, very fat lizard living there; so i thought i would take a break and see if he leaves on his own.  i know, i'm a baby.)  so....here is my problem:

-we live in southern california and the weather is always good.  dirt is kind of sandy, but things so far seem to grow really well.  i have two plots of dirt (about 2' x 4' and 2' x 8-9') that are open.  the dirt has been feeding the giant tomato, grape vine and some peppers.  it's also infested with ants and pill bugs.  so here are some questions:
1.) are the ants a problem?  should i kill them?  if so, how?
2.) is the dirt totally empty of nutrients?  can i plant some flowers, or does it need to lay fallow?
3.) do i need to fertilize?

-i would like to plant some wild flowers, but is it too late?  suggestions for planting from seed?  is my dirt plantable???

-i think i prefer veggies in pots as i don't like pulling weeds (nor do i have time for it) and (i know, baby again) don't like crawly critters.  what kind of flowers do you recommend?

so....in conclusion:  i am a gardening idiot, but like the idea of gardening.  i don't have a lot of time and don't want TONS of maintenance (i'm also a hopelessly addicted knitter/sewer/artist, plus a mom...yikes!).  thanks for helping out with my gardening ignorance.

9  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / attempt at ottobre coat on: February 28, 2008 09:16:52 AM
i've been lusting after ottobre for a while, but don't have the money to subscribe or the patience to wait for it in the mail.  i really wanted to make this coat:

so, i adapted another baby coat pattern, watched a collar-making tutorial on youtube and:

this was my first attempt with cheapo fleece.  i'm thinking i will make in another fabric, with a patterned lining...any thoughts?
