41  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Avant garde bird head piece on: February 28, 2010 04:45:43 PM
I'm not sure if that's an apt description of this hat/headpiece, but it's definitely interesting. The bird was part of a Christmas tree ornament I picked out of a free box. The feathers were also a free box find. The tulle is from a HUGE piece of tulle I bought at the thrift store. I'm trying to think of more ways to use it up!

I may not have the guts to wear it anywear except a masquerade party or something. But I like the drama and it makes a statement.

My cousin's daughter has recently learned the same trick, and I am just getting around to starting the same project for her since she asked me to think something up. I will model mine after yours!

I forgot to say how I made it: The skirt and bodice are based on Simplicity 5095, which I believe is a pattern from 1972. I use it a lot for the skirt part of garments. I shortened it be several inches.
The bodice is loosely based on McCall's M5292, I added some gathering at the center front and also added the little collar and did buttons down the back instead of a zipper.

Sigh, I want to wear it today.

Had the day off from work for president's day, so I finished this dress I worked on over the weekend.

close up on the bodice, I'm not sure if you can tell it's a marigold yellow with tiny white polka dots.

Here it is on my homemade dress dummy, my friends call it DoppelAnna. That's me in the corner. (That's me in the spotlight..... losin my religion....uhh...)

And a shot of the big vintage green buttons down the back, sorry I'm awkwardly clicking the button behind my back to take the picture

And on me, boobylicious

47  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: What to do with old panties...??? on: February 06, 2010 07:17:42 PM
I actually happened opon a big garbage bag of old panties.... i found that they all had either an elastic band which could be removed from its casing and repurposed in sewing projects, such as the waistband for a skirt, or some had an elastic lace waistband that can be cut off and used for edging another garment... hope that gives you some ideas
48  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Sundress in February on: February 06, 2010 12:53:55 PM
This is my first post, hopefully I can figure it all out..

So, it's only February and I live in Minnesota, so I guess I won't be wearing a sundress anytime soon, but a girl can dream for early spring, so I made this little number out of some very stretchy knit thrift store material using a retro bikini top pattern for the top (Kwik Sew 2082).

Hopefully someday it will be warm enough to wear it and I can post some action shots!
