21  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: MLP: Friendship is Magic Swap (SIGNUP 09/06/11-9/20/11;MAIL BY 10/25/11) on: September 27, 2011 08:58:13 AM
So cute! What a good job on the custom pony!

So now I have questions. What kind of paint did you use on her? How did you keep it from chipping off the plastic?

What are some good sites for a budding pony customizer?

The MLPArena is where I swapped this pony and where I learned a lot about customizing.  For this pony I used Krylon white spray paint that is made for plastic. I did a couple light coats to get her covered. Then I used thinned craft acrylic paint to do many coats over the spray paint.  I use acrylic for models (like for gaming miniatures) for most of the rest of the painting, although I used some extreme glitter paint over a base purple for the balloons so they would match the original pony.  After I finished all of the painting (but before the re-hair) I sprayed her with sealer called Dullcote made by Testors (also found in hobby and gaming stores that carry supplies for miniature painting.)

All of the ponies I have customized so far have been full re-paints.  It takes patience and a lot of thin coats and a good brush but it can be done.  It is also possible to dye them using RIT dyes although I haven't tried it. I have read that the powders tend to work better than the liquid.

And yes, you do have to take the heads off is you are rehairing the ponies. The different generations have different ways of doing this with the new ones being the most difficult. MLPArena has some good tutorials.

For re-rooting I made my own version of a "re-root tool" and it makes the rehairing go much faster.  I will say if you are thinking about making a custom pony and will be ordering new hair from Dollyhair then get your order in soon. It can take a week or more for the hair to arrive and you don't want to be waiting until the last minute for the supplies.  Other hair can be used but may not style as well as the nylon from Dollyhair. People have used hair from the kids wigs from the dollar stores. And of course all of the Halloween wigs are out now as well if you can find one for cheap.

Let me know if you have any other customizing question. Here are links to the two that I have posted here.

Here is a pony I made for a swap on another site. We made G1 ponies using the new g4 ponies.  This is Surprise and I made her using a Fluttershy.

Yes, I will be doing the same to you Hyper-Piston!  I just have to survive the weekend . (Roller derby league hosting regional tournament.)

And she sold that Rainbow Dash fur suit on e-bay for, I think $6000.

She has really amazing tutorials for dollhouse miniatures and offers new ones once a month!

That site just ate a hour or so of my day.  So many great tutorials.  I really liked the tutorial on making furniture with mat board if you are going to paint it. Just amazing!

I have just finished all the painting for the outside but now I kinda hate the colors I chose.  I think I may need to darken them up. Or maybe change them out altogether. But I already have my window frames glued on. *sigh*  Well I did start this thinking it would be a long term project.

Cheesy I live in Hillsboro! If you don't mind my asking, where do you work at?

I work at the Intel Ronler Acres campus.  It's the big one with all the construction work and giant cranes, although I work in a building on the other side of the campus.

Yeah I found a bait one for 50cents the other day. Its barnacle. His hair is frizzed with  rot. His cutiemark is rubbed off a little, as is his eyes. And he has marker on him. So...that's why I am gonna make him otherwise. But what I saw on Ebay, he's decently easy to find and not too expensive.
I have rerooted and customized ponies before :3 I just don't want to just go buy just a hank for him and thats all. Money is too tight to buy more than that right now until all the bills are paid this week :3

Wow, lucky!  They are so hard to find to bait but it sounds like you got a good candidate.  And a decent Barnacle can run anywhere from $15 to $30 or so without any accessories. And getting a truly bait worthy Big Brother can cost $10 from other customizers.  So good job!

And yay for more people joining.

i am all excited now! I may make a g1 big brother into a Big Mac if I can get ahold of some dirty blonde hair before signups are over XD

Do you have an actual baity big brother?  They are kind of hard to find in bad condition and all of the big brother's are worth a bit of money.  I would suggest to anyone making a custom pony (G1, 2, or 3) to do some research before hand. You don't want to destroy a valuable toy. Or just post here and someone will help you out.

As for hair for customs you'll want to check out www.dollyhair.com/mlpnylonhair.htm  This is the same hair Hasbro uses.  It might take a week or so to get your hair so order as soon as possible once you know what you need.  For a FIM pony one hank is more than enough. For a G1 one hank might be enough if you don't make the hair very long.  You can get hair other places (dollar tree kids wigs for example) but if you want to color match exactly then Dollyhair is the way to go.

Questionnaire sent. My husband it just going to shake his head at me Smiley  I just finished a custom pony swap on another site.  (We turned G1 ponies into G4 ponies using the new FIM single ponies.)

If people want to try custom ponies for the first time there is a lot of information out there about how to do things and where to get supplies but I will be happy to answer questions or point you in the right direction for more info.

lvl0rg4n reminded me that this exists on the Wee House craftalong so I though I would pop over.  I would love to get together with other crafty people. I work M-F until 5pm in Hillsboro but I live in SE.  Most weekends around now are free but I start losing weekends once the local roller derby season starts (I referee.)  Wednesday nights are also out for me due to derby practice.
