11  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Blackwork Set on: October 29, 2011 10:49:04 AM
This is beautiful. I love blackwork and have done some but never for an actual outfit. And so far I have just been using cross stitch material. I can't imagine counting the treads in that linen.

I found this one that uses an old towel, very cool!

And this one using faux fur

That is the tutorial I was thinking about!

For my roof I am planning on using sandpaper.  Cut into strips and then cut part way up the strips for the individual shingles (without cutting all the way off) then glue the strips down staggering the cuts . You can paint them afterwards if you want but they will look like the rough roof tiles (I think they are asphalt tiles?)

Has someone here posted a link for a tutorial on making a thatched roof using faux fur fabric? I know I've seen one but I don't remember if it was posted here or not. It comes out looking amazing.

I am all set to send out today at my lunch break. I am afraid I might have gone a tad overboard.

Aw, love the brony decal with Big Mac.  I am so in love with him after that episode two weeks ago.  That poster is very impressive!  And I totally wish I had though of writing my note like that.

I have to finish up one project tonight. It will be close but I will get it done!  Sometimes I underestimate how long something will take...

I got a bit done this weekend. Although some of what I was working on didn't turn out great so I don't know if I'll send them.  I also got the prep work done for my main item. Should be able to get into it tomorrow after work.
18  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Completed Projects / Re: Apoxie Sculpt - I think I am in love with it! on: October 06, 2011 10:16:42 AM
This looks spectacular!
I have been using Apoxie Scuplt for some My Little Pony mods and customs.  It is great stuff.  So you adding the mica powers after you worked it but before it cures?  How late can you wait? And are you using the colored epoxy or just the white?

Nice!  I have a few projects I would like to get done before SteamCon but I am not sure if I am going to make it. If I see you in this I'll say hi!

So cute! What a good job on the custom pony!

So now I have questions. What kind of paint did you use on her? How did you keep it from chipping off the plastic?

What are some good sites for a budding pony customizer?

The MLPArena is where I swapped this pony and where I learned a lot about customizing.  For this pony I used Krylon white spray paint that is made for plastic. I did a couple light coats to get her covered. Then I used thinned craft acrylic paint to do many coats over the spray paint.  I use acrylic for models (like for gaming miniatures) for most of the rest of the painting, although I used some extreme glitter paint over a base purple for the balloons so they would match the original pony.  After I finished all of the painting (but before the re-hair) I sprayed her with sealer called Dullcote made by Testors (also found in hobby and gaming stores that carry supplies for miniature painting.)

All of the ponies I have customized so far have been full re-paints.  It takes patience and a lot of thin coats and a good brush but it can be done.  It is also possible to dye them using RIT dyes although I haven't tried it. I have read that the powders tend to work better than the liquid.

And yes, you do have to take the heads off is you are rehairing the ponies. The different generations have different ways of doing this with the new ones being the most difficult. MLPArena has some good tutorials.

For re-rooting I made my own version of a "re-root tool" and it makes the rehairing go much faster.  I will say if you are thinking about making a custom pony and will be ordering new hair from Dollyhair then get your order in soon. It can take a week or more for the hair to arrive and you don't want to be waiting until the last minute for the supplies.  Other hair can be used but may not style as well as the nylon from Dollyhair. People have used hair from the kids wigs from the dollar stores. And of course all of the Halloween wigs are out now as well if you can find one for cheap.

Let me know if you have any other customizing question. Here are links to the two that I have posted here.
