Hi all!  I'm about to knit my first hat, and I think I've managed to psych myself out about casting on.  I pretty much use cable cast on for everything, but I'm reading conflicting info about whether it's good for things like hats.  Some people seem to find it very stretchy, others find it too firm.

Thoughts?  I don't know how to long tail cast on, so it's pretty much between cable cast on and perhaps knit cast on.

I'm trying to knit a Calorimetry, but I'm having trouble getting it to turn out ribbed -- I keep ending up with some sort of strange seed stitch variant.  It's not until I get to the 2nd set of short rows that the ribbing shows up.  I have NO idea what I'm doing wrong.  I've done ribbing before, but no matter what I seem to do, I keep getting this strange stitch instead of ribbing.

I've tried casting on 88 & 90 stitches, thinking that maybe when I turn the work, that's causing me to go off pattern, but neither has worked.  I've now frogged this 4 times, and I'm super frustrated.

Any tips?  This project is going to drive me insane!

I'm sure this has already been discussed ad nauseum, but I'm a newbie to knitting and I'm looking for a good way to store all of the yarn I've already accumulated, plus the needles in every shape and size that I seem to pick up for each project.  Right now, I've just got a corner of a spare bedroom with bags and bags of stuff heaped up.  I'd prefer something a bit more organized.

So...what are you storing your stash in?
