1  Lamp, bookcase, chairs and wall art.. i've been busy!!! in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by islandfly on: April 01, 2010 12:30:13 PM
Ive been getting crafty! I am notorious for starting a project and leaving it unfinished, so I am always super excited when Ive finished something (even if its years later!).

We recently moved after a burglary and that inspired me to get off my butt and finish some projects on my list since forever, and also to post it!! Some are recons, some are new. I wasnt sure where to post it all, but take a look at the pics. Let me know what you think!

My brother & I did this wall art and totally inspired by this post from grammardog!!  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=246766.0
Was the messiest and most fun project! Then I bought the frames at Michaels and 2 of the glasses broke. Replaced them and after the move another broke. So I have to get that replaced and put back up Sad sorry about the crapalicious picsI cant find the good ones I took when they were hanging. They looked really pretty then.

the bamboo is the one missing the glass and now frame

Then my dad and I built a bookshelf - he suggested we paint it green, which looked awful and showed up all the flaws in the wood (re-used) and workmanship (were amateurs!!) so I painted it a brown type twice and sanded, then sealed with polyurethane. Then It got scratched in the move so needs some touching up!

and a close up

Next is the lamp that is been unfinished for 2 years. We took an old plant pot, filled it was some soil and stones and made it a lamp! Its still not done needs a paint job, and gotta fill back up with pretty stones since its just dirt, but otherwise its functional took forever to find a shade and then it still wasnt right, but we made it work!

Then I recovered the porch chairs.

This is the couch (and before fabric).

I thought I had waay too much fabric, but guess what? Ive run out!!!! Now I have to find a compliment for the couch since the store has noo more Sad aaahhh!! So it goes. All I have to do is put on the fabric buttons for the tufting (is that the word?)

and just for kix... my baby

2  Princess Leia and Her Jedi in Halloween Costumes by islandfly on: November 16, 2009 03:43:20 PM
This is the first time ever we ever dressed up for Halloween. My husband is usually a spoilt sport, but this year since i proposed the star wars theme he was really into it.

It was a great party... everyone dressed up and the entire house was decorated with skulls and brains, spiders, webs, skeletons and tombstones... totally decked out!

I made both our costumes (the night before) and my brother's (a shaolin master) The pics aren't so great but i think you get the picture (no pun intended!! lol)

Here is the link to my other post that has all the pics!

Enjoy!

4  bedroom curtains in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by islandfly on: March 22, 2009 12:24:19 PM
We needed bedroom curtains, and as the very long ones were very expensive I decided to be a little adventurous and make them myself. It was a little difficult to work with all that fabric since there are 2 layers, and the curtains are 9 feet long, but here they are! (please excuse the unmade bed, mess etc..pretend they aren't there)

Work in progress - i hung them from a cupboard to check the length.. notice the door to the left... yes they are looong curtains. the underlayer isn't quite long enough, but i can live with it, since i dont have anymore fabric.

temporary curtains while we waited!

What do you think?

5  my coordinated kitchen in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by islandfly on: March 22, 2009 12:14:55 PM
my husband and I have been living in this apartment for 9 months, and it has taken a really long time to get things done (we both work long hours and some weekends). Anyway,  I resisted curtains in my kitchen until i found the perfect fabric...had a dream, went to the store and voila!! Its not typical kitchen fabric, but I'm not really a typical girl. (there were bamboo blinds there too but the thread dry rotted and hasn't been replaced Sad)

Because I love the fabric soo much, (and had leftovers) I made more things for my leetle kitchen

oven mitt

pot holder (which has to be redone but am posting anyways)

and bag holder for all our (bio degradable garbage) bags

next I am going to take trim to put on all my kitchen towels to they will match too!!!

C&C welcome!

6  my Black and white wedding - obese post beware in Weddings and Bridal Showers by islandfly on: July 03, 2008 10:03:07 AM
Being the creative (but not necessarily talented) girlie that I am, I decided I would craft a few things for my wedding. Somethings worked out really well, like the invitations, and then some didnt, like my fascinator and cake stand. I chickened out to wear my DIY fascinator. My husband saw it and said lovely, he liked it, his mom was like is that for the wedding? Her face expression alone made my put it in the bottom of the drawer never to be revealed again.

Then my cake stand.. I was going for this look. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=246438.0

But I couldnt find any funky/ sexy/ cool plates, so I just bought these yellow ones, and figured and I would spray paint a design on them. FAILURE!!! The design wouldn't lie flat, and where it did it stuck to the plate, and then pulled off the paint when I pulled it off!! So then I thought well I will just spray it one colour, but then the whole finish was uneven. One BFF sanded it down and painted it over. Did such a great job and we put it to dry in a room while it rained outside, to find it later that the room had a leak and the finish dried with water spots. Geez louise!!!! But It was dark and we covered it up so no one noticed. I tried to use the candleholders for the supports, but the glue wouldn't stick it. It just peeled right off. So we used the white vase in the pic (with mucho glue) and the candleholder on top with flowers and crystal beads, and wrapped black ribbon around it. And then I baked the cupcakes (dark chocolate) with white chocolate cream cheese and sour cream icing...mmmmmmmmm

Then 2 days before the church ceremony I happened to call one of the sextons who told me that there was a graduation on the day of my wedding so how could I possibly be getting married in that church what.? Turns out the priest booked us in the other church further down the road, and neglected to tell us. Sweet. So my husbands new name is Murphy. Cus everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.  Btw.. some people still havent gotten their invitations (but they still came) and the dressmaker almost didnt  finish my dress on time because she messed up the dates. I picked it up 7pm the night before. I was late to the church. Also I didnt finish my guest book in time, so I just used the cards alone and asked everyone to write warm wishes. The cards are white (frosty like) and I will stick them to a black page, and add pics of the person from the reception, to make a guest scrap book!
Oh and the biggest one.. we didnt get the rings in time, so DH bought some el cheapos for the ceremony, and we got the real ones 3 days later.  Whew!! That was a lot to go wrong.

What I did to save money
Everyone took pics, and I am taking all the best ones to make an album
I cut little cards from frosty white paper to make a scrap book instead of buying one I didnt like
I bought a vase and had it engraved with out names and date and got a floating candle. This was our unity candle.
We made all the food ourselves since it was mainly finger foods and hor dourvres and a char sui type ham DH made.
I got the alcohol duty free from the airport. We get a deal here, where friends can take the alcohol out of duty free for you (up to their max allowance) and then the store sends you a bill afterwards, so they dont even pay.
A friend lent me her video camera, and everyone took turns filming, which worked out even better since we have really funny commentary.
   I had my dress made
DH wore a suit he already had, and looks super sexy in. Flower girl also wore dress she already had from pervious wedding
One BFF did decorations for free (hes a professional) and since it was very low lighting, and there were no tables, we used all silk flowers = no cost (since he had them already!)
Another BFF did music for free
Another BFF did makeup for free (shes a professional)
   We had it at home
   Bought shoes on sale Cheesy
And your reward for all of that reading, here is the wedding porn. I hope you enjoy!! There arent the best pics because I forgot to take them before the party, so most of them are after the reception during clean up. Oopsie!

Unity Candle

Failed Fascinator

What I really wore

Sweetest Flower girl - sans headpiece and shoes

My dress in action - at the end of the night

Decorations - Candleabras, fabric and christmas lights

Cake Stand

and to match my theme everyone wore black (most people anyways)

7  Not your typical wedding invites... not a typical wedding.. black & white in Weddings and Bridal Showers by islandfly on: May 28, 2008 07:27:16 PM
here are my invitations that went out... try to imagine them in black and white. I had to take the pics without flash, so the colours are distorted  Embarrassed, but they are black and white.

We are having a very intimate ceremony with only immediate family and close friends, then going to honeymoon, and the following week having a reception for everyone else. Thats why there are 2 sets.

These are the ceremony invites printed on laser printer, I forget the name of the paper, but i wanted to show the shimmer it has. 4 invites per A4 page, which i cut and then taped with double sided tape to a black linen type cardboard back. It was labor intensive so thank goodness I only had 15 to do!!

the shimmer paper

completed invite

and here are the "reception" invites that I had done by a commercial printer, and maps which I printed on laser printer.

the invitations.

the map - Thanks to sweets4ever for the heart idea on the map.

I think in total it came up to about $1 each.

8  Re: if it was nice, do it twice... bracelet to dress (img obese) in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by islandfly on: May 28, 2008 06:58:54 PM
LOVE the orange.  This looks really cute on you.  Where did you get the bracelets?

some old thing I had laying around for years!

heres a bit if a tute for those that asked. It was very flattering! I've always been so inspired by all the great craftiness here on craftster, that now to get such great feedback.. whoohoo!!! It feels great! This is my first tute, so let me know if there was anything unclear.

This dress was ridiculously simple to make. You need about a yard of stretch cotton fabric, and then something for contrast. I of course used the old bracelet, but of course you can use a bit of brocade or lace or whatever.

The fabric was doubled without an edge, but if your comes flat, only folded, just add a side seam.

I took the square fabric and measured off a corner to match the width of the bracelet, then basted the bracelet onto the fabric, so I would know where the top was. I then cut a hole to fit my arm. The fabric doesn't fray so I didn't have to finish any edges.

Here is the armhole.

This pic shows the rest.

Any questions? Any suggestions on how to finish the edges, the bottom keeps rolling up, and I don't want it to.

9  if it was nice, do it twice... bracelet to dress (img obese) in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by islandfly on: May 28, 2008 10:36:07 AM
Ok, so I did a top with the green bracelet, and a creative vapse came over me (as well as the need for a new outfit) so the orange bracelet was made into a dress.

Here are the pics. Sorry there are so many.. I couldn't decide which ones to post

the bracelet

the materials

Excuse all the extras in the pics - THE DRESS!

excuse the bra strap

The back

I made it a little looser than I wanted, because the night I wore it, we went to dinner before meeting up with friends, so I needed the extra room to expand
I also wore it with v cool orange and yellow heels. Should have posted pics of that too..oopsie..

I was really excited about this one, and got a lot of really nice comments. The girls kept asking me, where did you get that dress I just smiled and said, the same place as the green top. They are still clueless!

Pictures are a little weird self portraits are hard!

Comments please

10  old bracelet to new top in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by islandfly on: May 08, 2008 08:38:06 PM
Well.. I guess this could be considered a re-con. I had this bracelet over 5 years.

the attachment broke, but I kept the bracelet thinking i would make something out of it some day. So a couple of weeks ago I finally got a few hours, and whipped this up.

front view

side view

Sorry for the craptastic photos.. i had to borrow from a friend's pictures, when we went on vacation. Got a bunch of compliments. I just stiched up the top real quick, and then handstiched the bracelet onto the top part.

Tell me what you think!
