1  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: too ambitious? on: January 06, 2008 07:34:44 PM
I dont quite understand where to join. When I tried it turned into this cone type thing...that doesnt seem right. :[ I got the circle though!
I kept going for a few more after the second line and it kind of came into a jumbled mess of little cones..
For the rest of the directions at the end of each line it says to join. Where would I be joining on those?

and then for these it says:
3: ch 3, work 1 dc where chain is, (work 1 dc, 2 dc in next stitch) around. Join. [36]

4: ch 3, work 1 dc where chain is, (work 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. Join. [48]

so for line 3 when it says 1 dc where chain is i put the dc in the ch that i'm in then do i do a second one in that same st and then 2 in the next one to the left? join where?? :{

and for 4 i put 1 dc in the ch st and then 1 dc in the next two st the the left then i run out of st and it says to do 2 more in the next st what should i be doing there?

sorry if this is annoying, i just dont understand. thank you so much for helping me out with this!
2  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / too ambitious? on: January 06, 2008 05:53:47 PM
I just decided to pick up crocheting and have the basics down. For my first "real" project I really want to make this pretty puffs slouchy hat (http://jessicasuzanne.com/craftypants/2007/09/13/pretty-puffs-slouchy-hat-with-pattern/) but am having a lot of trouble. I don't understand the pattern directions at all. I'm stuck on the first row which says:

1: ch 4, 12 dc in first st, join in ch. (Just grab one loop from top of the chain. This makes the seam less visible, and this will make a circle.) [12]

So..... I chain 4 and then in the first of those four do i make 12 dc? when I try this it just turns into a nest of yarn.

And reading ahead in line two it says:

2: ch 3, work 1 dc where chain is (in same st as join - ch3 counts as first dc), 2 dc in each stitch, join with sl st (remember, the ch counts as a st!). [24]

for there do I make a new chain from the ball and then go back to the beginning of the chain? :[

Should I move to a simpler project until the rosetta stone of crochet patterns is revealed to me or something?

tia

im making one of my guy friends a danica for christmas. another suggestion i have is the "a skew" scarf(http://www.magknits.com/Mar07/patterns/askew.htm) its a vertical ribbed scarf. its pretty simple and classy.

i agree with the above posters. something cool and funky like a slouchy hat, a calorimetry, fingerless glvoes etc would probably be a hit.
