1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / I have no idea what these instructions mean... on: February 01, 2008 02:28:01 PM
I just picked up knitting again after a long time, and I've never knitted a sweater before. I picked out an easy pattern and got to work, and other than an error in the pattern early on, I've successfully managed to get the body done and to the end of the first sleeve. But at the end of the sleeve, it says to "work even until sleeve measures 21 in. from beg (or desired sleeve length plus 3 in.). Bind off loosely."

That part seems to make sense, except that I'm not sure I want to roll the sleeve up at the end, and that's what I thought the three inches was for. So before binding off, I looked down at the finishing instructions to make sure, and it says this:

"Sew sleeves to front and back leaving the bound off sts free. Sew bound off sts to 3in. top side of sleeves on each side. Sew sleeve and side seams, leaving slits open."

And now I'm totally confused and afraid to bind off that first sleeve. How can I sew the sleeves on if I'm not sewing the side seams and I'm not sewing the bound off sts? What does "3in. top side of sleeves" mean? The fact this pattern already had a pretty bad error in the beginning doesn't help, because I don't know if I'm just not understanding them, or if they've left something important out.

The pattern is here: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/827.html?noImages=

It looks really basic -- just a nice warm baggy sweater. But I'm missing something. Thanks for any help.
