I was so lucky to be partners with jemimah in the IYP swap, she wanted something functional. I suggested placemats and then went through her likes and dislikes. I was so happy to see the fish from Kajsa Wikman's book Scandinavian stitches.
This is a great project to use all your scraps! I combined blue and grey to make the herring.
And close ups:
It is a bit hard to see, but I sewed on the word "silakka" which is Finnish for herring.
The cutting part and ironing on is pretty time consuming, but it is fun to make and I love the result! I also made the binding myself and sewed that on the wrong way so I had to rip it It ended up the right way, yay! And my partner jemimah likes it, double yay!!
I made a new bag, just for ME For my birthday I got this pretty fabric from my SIL and I decided to make a new bag for work. I drafted a simple pattern and started from there.
Here's a picture of the front of the bag:
I used the tree-fabric for the outside of the bag. The flower is detachable, it is a pin. My SIL also bought pretty cotton band, you can cut it in pieces and use the pieces as an embelishment. I used a piece on the front of the bag as you can see, but also in the seam of the bag. I like that kind of details.
I used the other fabric on the inside and also made a pocket of it on the backside.
A zipper, with fabric zipper pull. This is the other fabric too. Not so clearly on the pic... The strap is adjustable and I used the cotton band for the loops.
The inside of the bag:
Not so easy to take a picture and show the inside A zippered pocket, a nice welt pocket with zipper - proud of that!! And I added a label with my name in there. The other side of the bag has a simple pocket to hold my phone.
And a last pic, a close up of the cotton band I used to make a nice label:
Hard to see, but it says: Original & Handmade
Thanks for looking! Questions, comments or whatever are welcome! Critique too
I like cute, so the Ipad mini was made for me But I hate typing on the screen so I also got a keyboard that fits the Ipad mini. Now, I needed a case, no a CUTE case!
Browsing the internet I came across a felt case with the look of the start screen of the Ipad, FUN! I have no idea who started this, because I came across several cases on Etsy. So I can't give credit ...
On to the pictures:
Cute, right?! It started with black, thick polyester felt. Not so pretty, but thick and firm so very usable! I sewed two pieces together at 3 sides. On a piece of nice, pretty, grey wool felt I glued Ipad icons, also made of felt. I secured them with a tiny stitch in the corner.
A close up of that:
(The ruler is in cm)
That grey piece of felt was glued on top of the black polyester felt. I finished it with grey embroidery floss stitches. It was so thick, I had to use pliers to get the needle through!
It looks nice if you ask me!
It needed a closure of course. That wasn't easy.. No zipper; too thick. No velcron; don't like the look of that and it ruins my felt. No flap; makes it all so thick and how to close that??!! Okay, I decided to keep it simple and just sewed a piece of ribbon on the black felt (the edges weren't glued on that perfect, so I could easily sew under the grey felt). A nice button on the back and what do you know, it works!!
This will be a different kind of post for the first time. For those who know me, it won't be that happy and bright this time. So please be patient.
This time of year I am always very busy at school with the holidays, I'm busy with an education, so: tired but also this time of year I feel a sort of wistful. It all has to do with me being a 9 year old girl, loosing my mom (she died of cancer) and growing up so fast after that. This Sunday I felt so bad, sad, wistful and wanted to do something with that feeling. Not only did I cry a lot, I also made my very first art doll. Here she is:
I didn't really have a plan, just went with what felt right. So this is the little girl inside of me, she sometimes gets out and makes me sad and cry all day long. I made red eyes, due to all the crying. A sad mouth, big tears. Once I start crying, the tears keep coming. There is a sort of thinking cloud, because I still think about my mom a lot. Even though it has been more than 30 years ago.
More detailed picture of the face.
Details on the body. My heart has been ripped in two pieces, sort of healed but the scar is visible if you take a closer look. I hold a heart in my hand, that stands for the new love I found: my partner and my two kids. I hold a star in my other hand, that represents my mother. I still feel her around me, I believe her energy, her thoughts and love is still here. So I hold on to that.
The doll has unequal legs: my imperfections. And at the back you can see the simple pieces of string for hair. On the right you can see my stitches, I closed it but made it not that neat. I sometimes feel empty and need to fill up again. And if you know me, really know me, you'll notice the scars I have. Which is okay, it made me, ME. And I am proud to be ME.
If you have read all this, thanks for staying with me. I have been very honest, shared my pain with you. Don't worry, I am fine. Just have this feeling every now and then. I hope the art doll reminds me more of sharing my pain and sadness and to accept that feeling
She likes pumpkins and had this pumpkin figurines on her Wist with an incredibly ridiculous smile/grin. I went with those, altered the ninni pattern to make it more round like a pumpkin and added that smile/grin.
Et voilà I present to you..... PUMPKIN!
I stuffed him (I think Pumpkin is a male) in a paper bag and added a little sign "boo". Just for the Halloween-trick-or-treat-feeling. (Not that we celebrate Halloween, but this is like I imagine it to be)
Since I had so much fun making this ninni, I added a small orange ninni as a sort of little brother or stuffie. The card with the pumpkins was also made by me.
CMB is so nice to craft for! She had a mushroom mugrug on her Pinterest and I went with that! It needed some spicing up, so I wanted to add a little owl. I made the owl sit in a tree and used a piece of driftwood I found on a holiday in Norway.
Then I wanted to have some gnomes living there! My MIL made me the cutest little gnomes of wooden sticks and I shortened one of them, drilled a little hole and added two gnomes.
There are some beads on the ladybug on the mushroom and a few beads in the air. Makes it look a bit magical (I think). Just for the fun I added googly eyes, haha who knows what creature is hiding in the bushes....
The result is a bright, cheery and fun MAQ which my partner liked! A last picture, lots of sunshine so it is very bright. But this way you can see the colours best.
Thanks for looking!
I used some of the pictures taken by CMB. Thanks for that !
