21  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / my 'maid of honour' got married quilt on: January 15, 2014 06:49:36 PM
My oldest and dearest friend, the man who stood up for me and owned the title of maid of honour when I got married, found his own lady love. Since they live thousands of kilometers away I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting her. When he first told me of his engagement. He expressed concern that her 'clean modern Scandinavian ' decorating style and his 'bachelor cabin the woods' style would be hard to blend...

Pah!

. This side is Glimma by Lotta Jansdotter. I'd say that fits one bill.

And for him. I found a basic plaid flannel in greys and blacks.

I got it in the mail yesterday. Hopefully. It will keep them warm during long winter nights. For years to come.
22  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Lily's quilt. aka. passing down the skills on: January 02, 2014 07:47:05 PM
An old friend and her daughter (Cool and I were bugging about today. I had to pick up a backing fabric so we wandered off to the fabric store. Little one decided she wanted to make a quilt of her favourite things. At the store she picked the Canadian fabric (they are dual citizens currently living in the us) and the ombre teal used on the side borders.

When we got back here she sketched out her plan, I handed over the sharpie fabric paint pens and cut the 8" white blocks. The list of her favourite things include.
Me, my best friend, Butthead (her cat), mom, hearts, Canada, Dr. Seuss, and her iPad. The Butthead pic just slays me.

While her mom and I made apple cider caramels she created her masterpieces. Then. To the sewing machine. We went over pinning and why we do it. I showed her how to use the quarter inch foot. And let her rip. Then we learned pressing seams and pinning again. And we found a kid who LOVES the iron. Even though it did get a burn in. In really no time she had this top together.
I personally was impressed at how long this was able to maintain her attention. I guess I'm used to boys. Smiley
She picked a green frog flannel from my stash for the back. And while they went off for dinner I basted and quilted and bound it. Ready for pick up tomorrow.

And an in progress shot ...

*mods...if the presence of Butthead warrants a mature tag please apply or let me know ASAP. thanks.*
23  Category Challenges / Quilting: Challenge Entries / quilt your happiness. Paint box. on: October 21, 2013 08:25:11 PM
Colours. Simple patterns. Easy quilting. Something to wrap around a lap at an arena. This quilts my happiness.

When I quilt I like colour. Lots of colour. Random chaos of colour. That makes me happy.

Some of these blocks were made by craftsters all over the world. And that makes me happy.

And the softness of the flannel on the back. That makes me happy.

And having another finish. That makes me happy.

24  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Life in triangles quilt. on: September 29, 2013 11:59:31 AM
Where to start this quilt's story.

How about months ago. I started setting 'absolute love favourite favourite' fat quarters in a pile. For a quilt for me... Someday.   But i have been crazy busy with commissions.

Last Saturday afternoon a scary tweet crossed my feed. The local police posted a missing report of a old friend. Someone i saw around town, but hadn't really caught up with in a while. Saturday evening, reports came in he had been located. Sunday morning's press release was "deceased, no foul play suspected". Sadness abounds.

In my process of processing this early death I found myself  unable to get to the commissions I have half done and knew I had to make myself something  that I would love. To add some warmth and beauty to the world. As Chris had done.

I started cutting with no really plan. And had always sworn I would never make another equilateral triangle quilt. But.  Never swear to yourself. Smiley over the week between the visitation and reconnecting with dozens if people I hadn't seen in years, between beers and tears and the funeral, I poked away.

I had some problems with this one. But it's like life.

It has a chaos in order if you know where to look, sometimes you lose a point or two and you end up with unexpected wrinkles. But it makes me happy to look at it. And after a week like this. Sometimes the small smiles mean the most. RIP Chris.

25  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / black boston bruins on: September 08, 2013 08:29:18 AM
It seems there are no habs fans where I live.
This is my second Boston quilt. I found a Deviantart site that has all 30 NHL team logos in cross stitch form. Handy for pixel quilts.  Smiley after posting this one I got an order for three more. A Boston a Detroit and a Vancouver. Then hubby suggested I splurge on the accuquilt. Smiley I have the best hubby.
26  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / a chevron quilt full of firsts. on: September 08, 2013 08:19:03 AM
On labour day I wandered into my sewing room about 1230. At 2130. I wandered out with this. (with appropriate breaks for coffee, beer and dinner  Grin)

It was my first time using a charm pack. My first time using shot cotton. My first time letting hubby pick the borders. This one. I'm keeping.
27  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Birch Tree Quilt. now with pink bird. on: September 08, 2013 08:14:40 AM
I made this for the FOC secret Swap.  Smiley
I made the 'tree' strips and then appliqud it them to the top. I just couldn't figure out the math ton piece it and I was running short on time Grin. I love the way it came together. And the quilting that changes in each zone.
